The Hazards of Babies Wearing Open-Crotch Pants: Mosquitoes, Parasites, Sunburn, and Injury

February 20, 2024

Every summer, there are many babies in the pediatric clinic who suffer from urinary diseases. What is the reason? Experts remind us that it is due to babies wearing open-crotch pants and poor hygiene habits. For babies who love to put their hands in their mouths, they can bring bacteria from their hands into their digestive system, leading to diseases such as hand, foot, and mouth disease or diarrhea.

I. Attracting Mosquitoes

Some mothers like to dress their babies in open-crotch pants when going out to play, which is very undesirable. Babies wearing open-crotch pants expose their buttocks and external genitals, making it easier for mosquitoes to crawl onto them when sitting on the grass.

Mosquitoes are carriers of diseases, and the consequences of being bitten by mosquitoes can be serious. Due to individual differences in the human body, the severity of symptoms after being attacked by insects can vary. In severe cases, some people may experience systemic symptoms or even life-threatening conditions. Babies usually have weaker physique and lower resistance, and they love to play, so they are more prone to insect attacks and diseases.

The Four Hazards of Babies Wearing Open-Crotch Pants

Moreover, there are many insects in the soil, and they can easily crawl up along the baby's bare buttocks and cause harm. If they get into the baby's eyes, nose, or ears, it can be very dangerous. Therefore, I suggest that mothers take their babies to play outdoors wearing long-sleeved clothes and long pants, and not expose too much skin.

II. Attracting Parasites

Whether they are just learning to crawl or starting to walk, babies often crawl and sit on the ground. Especially in public places, in addition to visible dirt, these places are actually where parasites gather. Babies wearing open-crotch pants are more likely to attract parasites, leading to diseases such as ascariasis and hookworm disease, which can harm the baby's health. Therefore, when the baby starts to express the need to defecate, it is best not to wear open-crotch pants anymore.

In addition, many babies like to suck their fingers. Babies explore the surrounding world mostly through their own hands. Babies wearing open-crotch pants often touch their buttocks or genitals with their hands. If the baby's bottom is not cleaned in time after defecation, the urine and feces residue at the urethral opening and anus can enter the baby's body through sucking fingers, and parasites can also be easily brought into the body.

III. Easy Sunburn

It is now the hot summer, and the average temperature is around 34 degrees Celsius all day long. Babies wearing open-crotch pants are more susceptible to sunburn.

If the baby does get sunburned from wearing open-crotch pants, and the sunburn is not severe, you can moisten a towel or gauze in cool water, wring it out, and gently apply it to the baby's sunburned area. Do this several times a day, each time for 10-15 minutes (pay attention not to let the baby catch a cold). Or you can add a spoonful of baking soda to lukewarm bath water and let the baby soak, which can also cool the skin and relieve redness and swelling. Regardless of the method used, after treatment, gently apply a layer of moisturizing lotion to the baby to ensure that the skin receives sufficient moisture and nourishment.

However, if the baby's sunburn is severe and blisters appear, please take the baby to see a doctor. Nevertheless, to protect the baby's delicate skin from sunburn, it is best not to dress the baby in open-crotch pants.

IV. Prone to Injury

Open-crotch pants do not provide any protection for active babies. The external genitals of babies are one of the most delicate parts of their bodies and are prone to injury. Without the protection of diapers or clothing, babies are more likely to get scratches, burns, pinches, bumps, and other injuries during play.

If outdoors, they may accidentally be pierced by sharp objects such as broken glass or tree branches, or be scratched by pets. These injuries can have a great impact on the baby's health and may even lead to lifelong disabilities.

During the process of exploring the outside world, babies also explore their own bodies. Inevitably, babies wearing open-crotch pants will touch their genitals. If the bottom is not cleaned in time after defecation, the urine and feces residue at the urethral opening and anus can be spread to other objects through the baby's hands, contaminating other people who come into contact with the same objects, especially other babies. In infancy, most babies will suck their fingers (or bite their fingers).

This behavior is a normal part of a baby's development. However, this behavior can easily bring pathogens from the outside into their bodies. The urine and feces residue on the baby's hands can also enter the body, causing diseases in the baby's digestive and respiratory systems.

The baby's hands can carry dirt from the genitals to other parts of the body, and they can also carry dirt and pathogens from other parts to the urethral opening and anus. In addition to the hands, when the baby's genitals come into contact with objects in daily activities, such as tables, chairs, walls, toys, floors, and the surface of family members' clothes, these places are actually where pathogens gather in large numbers.

The process of mutual contact is a process of mutual contamination. The urethral opening and anus have secretions that provide a moist environment conducive to the growth of bacteria and viruses, becoming a breeding ground for pathogens. Pathogens can invade the body through the delicate mucous membranes and skin of the genitals, causing the baby to get sick.
