Understanding Abdominal Pain in Early Pregnancy: Warning Signs and Possible Causes

February 11, 2024

Many expectant mothers in the early stages of pregnancy may experience a dull pain in the lower abdomen. Do not take it lightly. Observe carefully and if you feel any abnormalities or concerns, it is best to go to the hospital for a check-up, as this type of abdominal pain may be caused by pathological conditions such as miscarriage or uterine fibroids.

I. Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy refers to the implantation and development of fertilized eggs outside the uterus. In addition to being unable to grow normally due to developmental issues, this type of embryo can also cause maternal complications.

The symptoms of ectopic pregnancy can be summarized into three main points: missed period, abdominal pain, and vaginal bleeding. When expectant mothers experience these symptoms, they should consider whether an ectopic pregnancy has occurred and seek timely treatment.

II. Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids can grow during pregnancy and can affect pregnancy in various ways, including degeneration and necrosis of the fibroids, torsion of the fibroids, and direct interference with fetal development or obstruction of delivery. This type of pain usually comes on suddenly and the pain point remains fixed, indicating localized pain.

III. Ovarian Tumors

If ovarian tumors are discovered during pregnancy, it is important to contact a doctor promptly. If symptoms such as colicky pain, abdominal discomfort, abnormal abdominal distension, or ascites occur, medical attention should be sought as soon as possible.

IV. Acute Appendicitis

Due to the enlargement of the uterus, the position of the appendix will be pushed upward as the weeks of pregnancy increase. Therefore, the location of the pain will also change. Early symptoms include tenderness in the lower right abdomen, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal muscle tension. As the weeks of pregnancy increase, the typical symptoms of acute appendicitis may become less apparent. Therefore, abdominal pain must not be ignored.
