Relieving Baby Diarrhea: Effective Massage Techniques and Recommended Diet

February 4, 2024

Baby diarrhea, although common, still worries every mother. In addition to daily dietary adjustments, mothers can also alleviate the baby's diarrhea by using massage techniques.

Massage Techniques for Baby Diarrhea

1. Shenque Acupoint

The main point is the location of the navel. Massage for about five minutes. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Shenque acupoint has the functions of invigorating the spleen and nourishing the kidneys. Regular massage of Shenque acupoint can promote blood circulation, regulate stomach function, and relieve constipation.

2. Guiwei Acupoint

The Guiwei acupoint is located at the bottom of the spine. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that regular massage of this acupoint can regulate the function of the large intestine, prevent diarrhea, and promote bowel movements. Gently massage the Guiwei acupoint with your thumb, making gentle circular motions.

3. Zusanli Acupoint

Starting from the protrusion below the patella, move four fingers' width down the outside of the shin bone. Use the tip of your thumb to knead Zusanli acupoint 100-200 times. This acupoint can regulate the stomach and intestines, relieve indigestion, reduce bloating, alleviate pain, reduce swelling, and promote blood circulation.

Recommended Diet for Baby Diarrhea

1. Boiled Apples

Fully cooked apples have astringent properties. Give your baby one apple a day to help alleviate diarrhea. When boiling apples, use water or add some rock sugar, as babies tend to prefer this.

2. Carrot Soup

Carrots are alkaline food. The pectin in carrots can promote the formation of stool and absorb bacteria and toxins on the intestinal mucosa. It is a good food for stopping diarrhea.

3. Chestnut Porridge

Mash 3-5 chestnuts without the shell, boil them with water until they become a porridge, and add sugar for taste. Eat 2-3 times a day. This porridge can warm the middle burner and stop diarrhea. Orange jujube tea and carrot soup also have the effect of invigorating the spleen and stopping diarrhea.

4. Hawthorn Malt Water

When a baby has diarrhea due to indigestion, you can boil some hawthorn malt water for them to drink. It works well. Use roasted malt and 3-5 hawthorns. Add some brown sugar for better taste.

Precautions for Diarrhea Massage

1. Control the Time

Generally, the total time for pediatric massage is 20-30 minutes per session. However, the frequency and duration of massage may vary depending on the child's age and condition. Older children and those with more severe conditions may require more frequent and longer massages, while younger children may require fewer and shorter sessions.

2. Gentle Technique

Massage is mainly used for mild and chronic diarrhea. For severe diarrhea, severe dehydration, and acid-base imbalance, comprehensive treatment should be used. The massage technique should be gentle and not damage the child's skin.

3. Proper Diet

Advocate breastfeeding and avoid weaning in the summer. When introducing complementary foods, do it gradually and pay attention to a balanced diet. Cultivate good eating and hygiene habits in children. Avoid long-term use of broad-spectrum antibiotics to prevent disruption of intestinal flora and the proliferation of drug-resistant bacteria, which can cause enteritis.
