Proper Methods for Bathing a Newborn Baby: A Guide for Young Parents

January 27, 2024

Every young parent hopes that their newborn baby can grow up healthy. However, there are many details that parents need to pay attention to in daily life, so as not to affect the child's growth. Below, I will introduce the correct method of bathing a newborn baby.

Preparation before bathing

Bathing time:

Between meals, when the baby is not hungry or full, with a healthy body and a happy mood.

Bathing environment:

Choose a safe, sheltered, and warm place, and choose a time when the daily temperature is higher. The room temperature should be controlled at around 25℃ to 28℃.

Preparation before bathing:

The person bathing the baby should take a bath and disinfect first, trim their nails, and remove watches and rings to avoid scratching the baby. Wash hands before bathing the baby.

Preparation for bathing:

When preparing the bathwater, first add cold water and then hot water, and keep the baby away during this process.

Test the water temperature with the inside of your wrist or use a thermometer, which should be around 37℃ to 40℃.

Precautions during bathing

1. Always pay attention to the depth of the water, even if there is only a small amount of water in the bathtub.

2. Consider using a large bathtub for bathing the baby only when the baby can sit in the bathtub by themselves.

3. You can choose to let the baby sit on a small chair in the bathtub for bathing.

4. Use the back of your hand or elbow to test the water temperature. Baby's skin is sensitive to hot water, so try to use warm water when preparing the water.

5. Keep the baby away from the faucet during bathing to avoid accidents.

Steps for bathing the baby

1. Position: Hold the baby's body on the side of the mother's waist, supporting the baby's head, neck, and back with one hand, like holding a football.

2. Washing the face: Use the four corners of a small towel to clean the baby's face in the order of eyes, nose, ears, and face, from the inside out.

3. Washing the hair: Press the baby's ears with the thumb and middle finger to prevent water from entering the ears. Use the other hand to apply soap or body wash (it is recommended to use soap, as body wash requires more chemical stabilizers in the production process) and gently rub. Rinse with clean water and dry the hair.

4. Washing the front of the body: Wet your palm with water and gently pat the baby's chest to let the baby adapt to the water temperature. Use one hand to fix the baby's armpit and use soap to clean the groin, chest, upper limbs, abdomen, lower limbs, and genital area.

5. Washing the back of the body: Turn the baby over, use one hand to fix the baby's armpit across the chest, let the baby lie on the palm, and clean the back, buttocks, and lower limbs in order.

6. Drying the body: After bathing, lift the baby out of the bathtub and immediately dry with a large towel. Pay special attention to the back of the ears, joints, and skin folds. It is not recommended to use talcum powder. You can apply some body lotion or baby oil as needed, and immediately put on diapers and clothes. Newborns also need umbilical cord care.
