Newborn Care: Avoid These Common Mistakes

January 27, 2024

After ten months of pregnancy, the baby is finally born. However, for new mothers, how to take care of the baby has become a challenge. So how should we take care of the baby? First, let me tell you a few things that should not be done too early. Let's take a look together with me!

Things that should not be done

1. Kissing the newborn with your mouth

Adult mouths contain a large number of bacteria, with each tooth having billions of cells, viruses, and other microorganisms. The tongue contains even more bacteria and viruses.

Once you kiss the newborn, these bacteria and viruses will be transmitted to the baby's mouth or skin through saliva.

However, because the newborn's immune system is not yet fully developed, they cannot resist these foreign pathogens, which can easily lead to diseases.

2. Pinching the baby's cheeks

Some adults find the chubby cheeks of newborns adorable and habitually pinch their cheeks to show affection.

The force from adults may be too much for the baby to bear, and it may affect the development of the baby's salivary glands or make the baby drool more, thereby exacerbating the problem of skin eczema.

3. Giving the newborn drinking water

Newborn feeding is a complex matter. Newborns do not need to drink water before 6 months of age unless there are special circumstances. They only need to be breastfed.

The earlier the breastfeeding starts, the better, usually around half an hour after birth.

4. Opening the baby's fingers and holding hands

The normal state of a newborn's fingers is curled up, but occasionally, their fingers may open. Some parents are excited after the baby is born and want to "hold hands" with the baby or pose the baby's fingers in various positions for photos.

However, doctors remind that a newborn baby's hand is a fist with the thumb in the palm, and the hand cannot open voluntarily. It is not recommended for parents to forcefully open the baby's hand.

5. Shaving off the baby's lanugo

Some parents may think that if they shave off the lanugo at birth, the hair will grow more lush, and there will be no "baldness" in the future. This is incorrect!

The newborn's skin is delicate and much thinner than that of adults. The stratum corneum, translucent layer, and granular layer are all thin and underdeveloped. The subcutaneous blood vessels are abundant, and the defense ability against the external environment is also poor.

Therefore, newborns are prone to infection due to the shaving of the lanugo. Once infected, it is not easy to control and may spread quickly.
