Bathing a Baby in Winter: Tips and Precautions

January 4, 2024

It goes without saying that the weather in winter is cold. Because of the cold weather, extra attention should be paid when bathing children, especially during bath time. Let's take a look at it together with the editor!

How to bathe a baby in winter

In winter, adults' hands are usually cold, so it is not easy to control the water temperature when bathing the baby. We can use a thermometer for bathing and add more water. The water temperature should be controlled at 37-40 degrees Celsius, which is the most comfortable temperature for the baby and prevents scalding.

At the same time, in order to prevent the baby from catching a cold in the strong cold wind of winter, do not forget to close the doors and windows when bathing.

If conditions permit, you can use a special bath cover for the baby, and try to add more water inside to keep it warm. This way, the baby can stay in the bath cover for a while without feeling too cold.

How often should a baby bathe in winter

Bathing should not be too frequent in winter. In areas north of Guangdong, if the child hasn't sweated much during the day, they can just wash their buttocks, feet, and face before going to bed.

In Guangdong, bathing can be done once a day at most, or every other day.

Make sure to wash the baby's face, hands, and buttocks every day. It is recommended to bathe the baby between two feedings. For babies who have trouble sleeping, bathing before bedtime can help them sleep better.

  Precautions for bathing a baby

  1. Do not rub vigorously

Some parents like to rub their children vigorously during bathing, but this actually removes the keratin layer. Once the keratin layer is removed, the skin loses its protection and becomes prone to allergies and infections. Therefore, do not rub the baby too hard while bathing.

  2. Do not use shower gel or soap every time

Do not use alkaline soap to bathe the baby, as it easily removes sebum.

For children with dry skin, even if it is a baby-specific bath liquid or soap, it is not necessary to use it every day. Once a week is enough.

  3. Apply moisturizer after bathing

In winter, the skin tends to be dry. After bathing, apply some moisturizer to nourish and protect the skin.

When the skin is still moist after bathing and drying, it is the best time for absorption whether applying ointment or oil.

After applying moisturizer to the baby, you can gently massage to accelerate absorption.

  4. Do not bathe for too long

When bathing the baby in winter, do not let the baby soak in water for a long time, especially if the baby has dry skin.

  Because prolonged soaking can cause dehydration of the skin and exacerbate dryness;

At the same time, prolonged soaking can also soften the outermost layer of the skin, reducing its resistance.
