Vegetable Dietary Taboos for Pregnant Women: What to Avoid

December 29, 2023

Being pregnant is very important for women, and there are many dietary taboos. They are worried that it will be harmful to the fetus. Therefore, in order to avoid affecting their health, women should pay attention to reasonable eating. So, which vegetables should women stay away from during pregnancy?

  1. Wood Ear Vegetable

Also known as Slippery Belly, Fall Kui, and Watercress. It is cold and slippery, with the disadvantage of slippery and cooling blood. As stated in the "Nanning Pharmaceutical Chronicle": pregnant women should avoid consumption. Especially in early pregnancy and pregnant women with habitual miscarriage (referred to as slippery fetus in Chinese medicine), it is even more important to avoid eating it.

  2. Eggplant

Pregnant women should avoid eating eggplant. As stated in the "Authentic Materia Medica": eggplant has a sweet taste and cold nature, and its quality is slippery and beneficial. Pregnant women who eat it will be particularly harmed. The "Dietary Notes" also believes that eating eggplant in late autumn can damage the eyes and harm the uterus, resulting in infertility. Therefore, pregnant women should avoid eating it or consume it with caution.

  3. Amaranth

Pregnant women should eat amaranth during the delivery period, because amaranth is slippery and beneficial, and can help smooth the fetus. As stated in the "Compendium of Materia Medica", amaranth is believed to help smooth the fetus. The "Dietary Notes" also states: pregnant women who eat amaranth will have a smooth delivery during the final month. Therefore, it is most suitable for pregnant women to eat it when they are about to give birth. However, it should be pointed out that amaranth has a slippery and beneficial nature, so it should be avoided in early pregnancy.

  4. Kelp

According to research, iodine deficiency in pregnant women can lead to poor fetal development and intellectual disabilities. Therefore, pregnant women should eat kelp to supplement iodine in their bodies. However, it should be noted that if pregnant women consume too much kelp, excessive iodine can cause fetal thyroid development disorders, which can have adverse effects on the fetus and may lead to hypothyroidism in infants after birth.

  5. Chinese Spinach

Also known as Water Spinach. It has a cold and slippery nature, so it should be avoided in early pregnancy, especially for women with a history of habitual miscarriage. As stated in the "Correct Meaning of Materia Medica", it can also enter the blood and dispel stasis. Li Shizhen also believed that Chinese spinach can promote blood circulation, reduce swelling, and help smooth the intestines and fetus. Modern clinical practice has found that Chinese spinach can cause smooth muscle contractions in the uterus. Therefore, pregnant women should avoid eating Chinese spinach, but it is an exception before delivery. Eating more Chinese spinach can actually facilitate a smooth delivery.
