Preventing and Managing Constipation During Pregnancy: Tips for Expectant Mothers

December 27, 2023

Constipation, a common problem during pregnancy, can be troublesome for pregnant women with poor digestive systems. What should pregnant women do when they have constipation? Does straining during bowel movement have any impact on the fetus?

Pregnant women are most afraid of constipation affecting the development of the fetus. Sometimes they may think that constipation is just a common problem and subconsciously believe that it does not have much impact on the fetus. However, long-term constipation can lead to toxin buildup in the body, which cannot be expelled and is absorbed by the fetus through various channels, thus affecting the baby's health.

Straining during bowel movement will not affect the fetus if it is only a matter of breath-holding and exertion.

If a pregnant woman has been diagnosed by a doctor as having "threatened miscarriage," it is advisable not to strain during bowel movements. Although in general, straining during bowel movements is not likely to cause a miscarriage, constipation during pregnancy with "threatened miscarriage" is particularly noteworthy. Straining during bowel movements in such cases may potentially trigger a miscarriage.

What should be done for constipation?

1. Eat more fruits in daily life. There is no harm in doing so. I recommend eating more bananas, as they can lubricate the intestines and facilitate bowel movements. However, do not eat too many.

2. Drink a cup of yogurt after each meal. The lactic acid bacteria in yogurt are very beneficial for digestion in the stomach, promoting food absorption and killing bacteria.

3. Drink a cup of honey water before going to bed every night. Do not go to sleep immediately after drinking, as it can cause eye puffiness. Wait for half an hour after finishing the honey water before going to sleep. The effect of honey water is similar to that of bananas, but it also has detoxifying properties.

4. Exercise more. Office workers often sit for the entire day, which can lead to poor blood circulation and is a major cause of constipation.
