Recognizing Signs of Weak Spleen and Stomach in Children: What Parents Should Know

December 22, 2023

According to traditional Chinese medicine, the spleen and stomach are the foundation of the body. Only with a healthy spleen and stomach can the body fully absorb the nutrients from food and develop properly. If the spleen and stomach are weak and cold, it can lead to various diseases. Parents should be aware if their baby shows these five signs!

Sign One: Redness of the lower eyelid The condition of the spleen and stomach can be reflected in the lower eyelid. When the spleen and stomach are weak and cold, the lower eyelid may become swollen and appear red. When the spleen yin is insufficient, the child may sweat at night and have restless sleep.

Sign Two: Pale complexion and thin muscles As long as the spleen and stomach are healthy, regardless of whether the skin color is fair, dull yellow, or dark, it will have a radiant appearance. However, children with spleen deficiency often have a sallow complexion and lack radiance, giving the impression of malnutrition. In addition, weak and cold spleen and stomach can lead to food stagnation, hindering digestion and absorption of nutrients, eventually resulting in malnutrition and a thin physique.

Sign Three: Frequent cough with phlegm According to traditional Chinese medicine, the spleen belongs to the earth element, and the lungs belong to the metal element. Earth generates metal. When the spleen and stomach are weak, the earth element is insufficient, and it can affect the lungs. As a result, the child's resistance to diseases decreases, making them prone to colds. Colds often come with a sore throat because weak and cold spleen and stomach can cause food stagnation and generate heat, which then attacks the throat, causing swelling and pain. At the same time, spleen deficiency can lead to water retention and excessive dampness in the body, making it easy for phlegm to form and causing the child to appear overweight.

Sign Four: Loss of appetite and bloating The spleen and stomach are responsible for digesting food. When the spleen and stomach are weak, the digestive function is compromised, leading to food stagnation in the child's body. If food stagnation occurs frequently, it will worsen spleen deficiency, making it difficult for the stomach to digest food and causing bloating and stomach pain. Over time, the child's ability to absorb nutrients will decrease, which is not conducive to growth and development.

Sign Five: Cold intolerance and lack of movement Children are naturally active and not sensitive to cold. However, some children not only feel cold but also wear more layers of clothing than their peers. They also dislike physical activities and sweat excessively with even slight movement. These are signs of spleen deficiency and excessive internal dampness.

The main way to treat spleen and stomach weakness and coldness is through a reasonable diet.

Boil a handful or two of rice to make rice soup. You can directly drink warm rice soup or crack an egg into the boiling rice soup, turn off the heat, and wait until it is warm to eat. If the child has diarrhea, put a piece of ginger in a small bowl and pour the boiling rice soup over it. You can add some sugar to adjust the taste of the ginger, or you can leave out the sugar. This is an effective remedy for vomiting and diarrhea.

Remember to eat it when it is warm. It doesn't have to be eaten every day; every few days is fine. Be consistent and continue for a few months or even years to permanently improve the child's constitution.
