Caring for Summer Babies: Tips for Healthy Growth and Development

December 16, 2023

Summer baby, as the name suggests, refers to babies born in the summer. Although babies born at this time are conducive to growth and development, the scorching sun also poses a great threat to these "tender shoots". "Raising children and singing opera, fearing only summer and winter" is a folk saying that reveals the difficulties of nurturing babies born in the summer and winter seasons. So, how should babies born in the summer be cared for?

1. Breastfeeding: Modern medicine has confirmed that breast milk, known as "white blood", is a precious natural nutrient for newborns. It is not only rich in nutrients, but also its quality and quantity can be changed according to the needs of the baby's growth.

What's more valuable is that it contains various anti-disease substances, which can help babies resist many common diseases and cannot be replaced by any formula. Therefore, after the child is born, breastfeeding should be insisted upon. In addition, breast milk has enough water content, as long as frequent feeding is provided, the child will not be dehydrated. Do not feed sugar water, as it will affect the child's appetite.

2. Proper clothing: In hot weather, babies should not be dressed in too many clothes, otherwise poor heat dissipation can cause a rise in body temperature or the appearance of white transparent blisters on the chest and back, commonly known as "heat rash". It is enough for the baby to wear thin clothes. It is not necessary to wear socks. Also, do not let the baby be completely naked to prevent damage to the baby's delicate skin.

3. Adequate sleep: Newborn babies spend most of their time sleeping, and good sleep is a necessary condition for ensuring normal physical and neurological development in children. Therefore, a good sleep environment should be created.

Let the child sleep in the coolest part of the room, but be careful not to let the child be directly exposed to drafts or fans. When it is not too hot, cover the child with a thin towel, and if it is too hot, let the child sleep in thin clothes; also hang a mosquito net to prevent mosquito bites; often change the child's sleeping position to prevent heat rash caused by a certain part of the baby's body being in contact with the bed for a long time without ventilation. More importantly, developing good sleep posture will be beneficial to the child's future growth and development.

4. Frequent bathing: Bathing in summer can help regulate the baby's body temperature and prevent sweat gland openings on the skin from being blocked by epidermal cells, which is beneficial for heat dissipation. It can also reduce and alleviate many baby skin diseases, such as neonatal dermatitis, neonatal eczema, diaper dermatitis, diaper rash, etc., and increase the baby's appetite and promote growth. Therefore, bathing 2-3 times a day is necessary. The temperature of the bath water should be around 37°C.

5. Suitable temperature and humidity: When the baby leaves the mother's body and enters the world, the temperature and humidity change accordingly. It is necessary to provide the child with a comfortable living environment, and the room should maintain air circulation without closing the doors and windows. For families with air conditioning, the temperature in the baby's room can be controlled at 22°C. If it is a premature baby, the room temperature should be increased to 24-26°C. The optimal indoor humidity should be 55-70%.

6. Pay attention to changes in body temperature: The newborn's brain is still in the development stage, the temperature regulation center is not fully developed, there is no sweating function, and the skin's regulation function is insufficient. The baby's body temperature often rises with high external temperatures, sometimes reaching 40°C. At this time, the baby should be breastfed frequently to increase fluid intake (infants fed with other formula milk should not be fed formula milk frequently). When the body temperature is too high, a small amount of boiled water can be given to the baby to lower the temperature through increased urination.

As long as you pay attention to these aspects of care, your child will be able to safely and healthily grow through the summer.
