Effective and Safe Methods for Treating Baby Constipation

December 10, 2023

Baby constipation not only causes physical discomfort, but also affects their growth and development. In the past, some parents would feed their babies bananas, honey, sesame oil, or even rhubarb water and senna leaf water to prevent and treat constipation. However, these methods have little effect and can easily lead to recurring episodes and harm the delicate stomach of the child. Below are some methods suitable for treating constipation in infants and young children.

Prepare corn porridge or feed corn

Grind fresh corn kernels with water in a blender (or other juicer) to make a slurry. Remove the residue and keep the juice, then heat it in a pot until it thickens into a porridge. Feed the baby once every 2-3 days, with 30-50 milliliters each time. You can make it when feeding, or make a larger batch of corn juice and store it in the refrigerator for future use. When feeding, cook it until it is done. Alternatively, peel off a few layers of fresh corn husk, leaving only one layer, and steam it in a pressure cooker (without soaking in water) for 15 minutes. After steaming, it can be used directly.

Make herbal tea for feeding

Mix 5 chrysanthemum flowers, 6 jasmine flowers, 1 piece of fat sea coconut, 8 wolfberries, a little orange peel, 7 lotus seeds, 3 pieces of licorice, and an appropriate amount of rock sugar. Soak the mixture in boiling water and feed the baby with the juice. Feed 3-4 times a day, with 10-30 milliliters each time.

Massage the baby's abdomen

Lay the baby flat on the bed, loosen some of their clothes, and use the palm of your right hand to massage the baby's abdomen in a clockwise direction with the navel as the center. Do this once every evening before bedtime, with 30-50 rounds of massage each time. However, apply appropriate pressure to ensure the baby's comfort. The person performing the massage should also trim their nails to prevent injuring the baby's skin.
