The Importance of Timing: Why Summer May Not be the Best Season for Baby Weaning

December 9, 2023

With increasing social pressure, the percentage of young mothers in cities who are eager to wean their babies is relatively high. In order to avoid taking a complete maternity leave and continue working, they impatiently give up breastfeeding shortly after the baby turns one month old. Some mothers also choose to abandon breastfeeding and use formula milk in order to quickly lose the weight gained during pregnancy through dieting. Experts advise these mothers not to rush to wean their babies, especially during the summer.

Infants are more susceptible to gastrointestinal infections such as bacterial dysentery during the summer, and they are also more prone to colds, fevers, and even seizures. Breast milk contains a large number of antibodies that greatly enhance the baby's immune system, thereby reducing the chances of contracting gastrointestinal infections.

In the summer, the temperature is high and adults can adapt to it by regulating their skin through the nervous system, increasing sweating. However, the nervous system regulation function of infants is not yet fully developed, making them more susceptible to heatstroke and dehydration. Breastfeeding can enhance the baby's nervous system regulation function, reducing or preventing the occurrence of these conditions.

During the scorching summer, people's taste buds are generally less sensitive, resulting in a loss of appetite. Infants may also experience a decrease in appetite. If weaning is carried out at this time, it is not conducive to the baby's nutrient absorption. Weaning in the hot summer requires the addition of other foods, which can easily cause indigestion, diarrhea, and other diseases in babies.

In conclusion, weaning should be done in the spring and cool autumn seasons, preferably not during the summer. Of course, specific situations may require some flexibility. For those with insufficient breast milk, early weaning may be necessary, while for those with sufficient breast milk or weak babies, weaning can be postponed accordingly.
