The Pros and Cons of Soy Milk for Babies and Children

December 1, 2023

Soy milk is a traditional and delicious "beverage" in China, and its calcium supplement effect is comparable to milk. However, it is not suitable for babies to drink soy milk too early, otherwise their digestive system will protest.

Infants under 1 and a half years old are advised not to drink soy milk because their digestive system is not fully developed at this age and their stomachs do not produce enough digestive enzymes for soybeans. Older babies can drink some soy milk, but it should be added gradually, starting with a small amount. Parents should also pay attention to observe if the baby experiences bloating, flatulence, or diarrhea. If so, the amount of soy milk should be reduced and gradually increased as the baby's digestive system adapts.

Drink fully cooked soy milk. Excessive intake of lectin in soy milk can cause nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and even poisoning. Trypsin inhibitors can seriously hinder the digestion and absorption of protein in the body, and in severe cases, it may cause pancreatic enlargement. The only way to destroy these two "toxins" is to fully cook the soy milk. In addition, do not drink overnight soy milk.

Do not add eggs and brown sugar to soy milk. The mucin protein in eggs can easily combine with trypsin in soy milk to produce a substance that cannot be absorbed by the body, greatly reducing nutrient absorption. Organic acids in brown sugar can also combine with proteins in soy milk to form precipitates, which will also destroy nutrients.

Although there are various restrictions on children drinking soy milk, for older overweight children, soy milk is easier to control weight than milk because it has lower calories. At the same time, soy milk mainly contains soluble fiber, and there is a large amount of insoluble fiber in soybean residue, which cannot be compared with milk.
