Sulfur and Cinnabar Moxibustion Therapy: Ancient Chinese Folk Medicine for Treating Diseases

February 18, 2024

Sulfur and Cinnabar Moxibustion Therapy is a method of using processed sulfur and cinnabar to be ignited and applied on acupoints to treat diseases. It is also known as Incense Moxibustion Therapy. This method has been widely used in folk medicine in ancient China. Zhao Xuemin, a medical scientist in the Qing Dynasty, recorded this folk treatment method in his book "Compendium of Materia Medica Supplements".

【Procedure】

Take 18 grams of sulfur and 15 grams of purified cinnabar powder, place them in a copper container, and heat the container over a low flame. Stir the sulfur and cinnabar with chopsticks until melted, then pour the hot liquid into a flat glass container or porcelain dish, and spread it out to form thin sheets. After cooling, take them out and cut them into small particles the size of watermelon seeds, called sulfur and cinnabar pellets, for later use. Select the appropriate acupoints based on the nature of the disease. Then have the patient assume the appropriate position and expose the treatment area. Apply one pellet of the medicine (half a pellet for children and elderly or weak individuals) with a small amount of ointment on one end, and stick it onto the treatment acupoint (to prevent it from falling off). Immediately ignite the sulfur and cinnabar pellet. After the fire is extinguished, clean the skin with a sterile cotton ball and apply a small amount of gentian violet. Treat each acupoint once. If there are blisters the next day, they can be punctured with a sterilized needle and applied with an anti-inflammatory ointment. If no ointment is applied, use a sterile gauze pad to cover the area and keep it clean to prevent contamination and infection.

【Indications】

This method has a good therapeutic effect on pain caused by wind-cold-dampness arthralgia, sprains, and contusions. The selection of treatment acupoints can refer to "Fine Needle Therapy".

【Precautions】

Same as "Scarless Moxibustion Therapy". In addition, avoid applying it on the head, face, heart, and other important organs.
