The Evolution of Moxibustion Devices: From Pottery Jars to Warm Moxibustion Devices

January 8, 2024

Warm moxibustion with a moxibustion device is a method of moxibustion. The use of moxibustion devices in China has a long history. The oldest moxibustion device was made using certain objects. For example, in the book "Emergency Prescriptions for Elbow Injuries" Volume Three, it is recorded that a pottery jar was used as a moxibustion device. In the book "Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold" Volume Twenty-Six, a reed tube was used as a moxibustion device. In addition, "Ancient and Modern Medical Mirror" by Gong Xin in the Ming Dynasty describes the use of copper coins as moxibustion devices. In Li Shouxian's "Easy Learning of Acupuncture and Moxibustion" in the Qing Dynasty, clay coins were used as moxibustion devices. The moxibustion board and moxibustion cover depicted in "Illustrated Manual of Surgery" by Gao Wenjin in the Qing Dynasty, the bowl-shaped moxibustion device proposed by Ye Gui, and the silver moxibustion cup in the Qing Dynasty were all specialized moxibustion devices used in ancient times.

Using a warm moxibustion device can provide continuous and comfortable warm stimulation to patients for a longer period of time, and it is easy to use. Currently, the following methods are commonly used:

Warm tube moxibustion:

Procedure: Before moxibustion, put moxa wool and medicinal powder into the small tube of the warm moxibustion device and ignite them. Then, hold the handle of the warm moxibustion device and suspend it above the acupoint or the affected area, moving it back and forth until the local skin becomes warm and redness appears, and the patient feels comfortable. Generally, moxibustion lasts for 20-30 minutes. This method is mostly used for women, children, and those who are afraid of moxibustion. It is widely used because patients are more receptive to it.

Warm box moxibustion:

Warm box moxibustion is a method of moxibustion using a specially designed box-shaped wooden moxibustion device. It contains moxa sticks and is fixed on the patient's body for moxibustion. There are three sizes available: large, medium, and small.

Procedure: Place the warm moxibustion box on the selected area, ignite the moxa stick, place it on the wire mesh directly above the acupoint, and cover it (the lid of the warm moxibustion box is used to adjust the temperature). Moxibustion lasts for about 20-30 minutes, and multiple acupoints can be moxibusted at once.

Warm cupping moxibustion:

Warm cupping moxibustion is a method of moxibustion by igniting moxa wool in a cup or small teacup for fumigation.
