Scalp Needle Therapy: An Innovative Approach to Disease Prevention and Treatment

February 16, 2024

Scalp needle therapy (referred to as scalp acupuncture) is a method of preventing and treating diseases by puncturing specific areas of the scalp with needles. It is a new type of therapy that combines the acupuncture principles of traditional Chinese medicine with modern medicine's theory of cortical localization. It is characterized by fast needle insertion, fast twisting, and fast removal. The "Ling Shu • Pathogenesis of Evil Qi in the Internal Organs" states: "The twelve meridians and three hundred sixty-five collaterals, their qi and blood all ascend to the face and run through the orifices." The Du meridian "ascends to the wind palace and enters the brain, reaching the top"; the foot yangming stomach meridian "ascends to the forehead, intersects at the top... enters and connects with the brain"; the hand shaoyang three yang meridian "connects behind the ear, straight up and exits at the upper corner of the ear"; the foot shaoyang gallbladder meridian "ascends to the top of the head and down behind the ear"; the foot yangming stomach meridian "follows the hairline to the forehead"; the foot jueyin liver meridian "ascends from the forehead and meets the Du meridian at the top"; the yangqiao meridian goes around the head, "enters the brain between the two tendons in the middle of the neck"; the yangwei meridian goes around the head, "meets the yaomen and wind palace, and enters the fengchi", also connecting to the brain. In addition, many of the twelve meridian branches and twelve meridian tendons are distributed in the head, such as the hand shaoyang meridian branch, "points to the sky, branches at the top"; the foot yangming meridian branch, "goes to the occiput, reaches the top"; the foot shaoyang meridian branch, "goes to the forehead, intersects at the top"; the hand shaoyang meridian branch, "goes to the upper jaw, branches at the top"; the hand yangming meridian branch, "goes to the left corner, branches at the head, goes down to the right jaw"; the foot yangming meridian branch, "goes around the head and joins the qi of all the meridians." These meridian branches, tendons, and collaterals that are distributed in the head are directly or indirectly connected to the brain. The "Su Wen • Essence of Pulse" states: "The head is the residence of essence and intelligence. When the head is tilted and vision is deep, the spirit will be exhausted." This means that the changes in the brain and marrow are reflected in the head through the meridians and collaterals. The "Ling Shu • Great Confusion" states: "The essence and qi of the five zang organs and six fu organs all ascend to the eyes and become essence... and belong to the brain." This means that all the meridians are connected to the eyes and belong to the brain. The head is the place where the qi and blood of the organs and meridians converge, and they have a close relationship both physiologically and pathologically. By stimulating the acupuncture points in the head, not only can the qi and blood be unblocked and the yin and yang balanced, but it can also systematically regulate the functions of various organs, thus treating various diseases throughout the body.
