The Bamboo Horse Moxibustion Method: A Scar Moxibustion Technique for Healing Abscesses and Boils

February 4, 2024

The Bamboo Horse Moxibustion Method is a special type of scar moxibustion. This method was first mentioned in the book "Wei Ji Xue Shu" by Dong Xuan Ju Shi and was later included in the "Bei Ji Jiu Fa" by Song Wen Ren Qi Nian. There have been recent reports on its application for reference.

【Procedure】

Locating the acupoint: Measure the distance between the Qu Ze acupoint on the upper limb and the Zhong Chong acupoint. Then, starting from the Tailbone Long Qiang acupoint along the midline of the spine, measure the distance to the end and mark it with a red dot. The Bamboo Horse acupoint is located 1 inch away from the dot on each side, approximately 1 inch below the spinous process of the 10th thoracic vertebra. During the moxibustion, place a 1.5m long and approximately 25cm in diameter bamboo pole on two tables, with padding such as felt on it. Have the patient sit on the bamboo pole with their feet hanging down, not touching the ground, and their body straight. Two people should support the patient from the sides. The tailbone should be pressed against the bamboo pole, and the marked acupoints should be clearly visible. Apply garlic juice to the acupoints, place the moxa stick on the acupoints, ignite it, and perform moxibustion for 5-7 breaths. After moxibustion, apply a water-based cream or sterilized gauze. When there is pus formation, change the dressing 1-2 times a day. The ulcer should heal in approximately 4-6 weeks.

【Indications】

Brain abscess, intestinal abscess, dental abscess, and all types of abscess and boils in the distal parts of the limbs. Some people have also reported certain therapeutic effects in treating vasculitis.

【Precautions】

During the formation of pus in the ulcer, it is important to keep the area clean and prevent contamination to avoid other inflammations.
