Treating Winter Diseases in Summer: Moxibustion and Beyond

January 24, 2024

Winter diseases can be treated in summer, and many people know that it is traditional Chinese medicine external application, also known as moxibustion. This is the most commonly used method for treating winter diseases in summer. However, there are actually many methods for treating winter diseases in summer, including moxibustion, diet therapy, cupping, and heat therapy (sunbathing, far infrared cabin, hot spring therapy, beach bathing), etc.

Although winter diseases can be effectively treated in summer, for people who are not suitable for traditional Chinese medicine external application due to sensitive skin and other reasons, moxibustion can be used as an alternative method.

1. Zusanli Acupoint Moxibustion

Location: Located 3 inches below the outer eye of the knee on the front and outside of the lower leg, one horizontal finger width outside the anterior crest of the tibia.

Method: Ignite one moxa stick each time and apply it to the acupoint. Moxibustion should be done on both acupoints. Once a day, be careful not to burn the skin.

Effect: Regulates the spleen and stomach, adjusts qi and blood, aids digestion, and strengthens the weak.

2. Shenque, Qihai, and Guanyuan Acupoint Moxibustion

Location: Shenque acupoint is in the middle of the abdomen, at the center of the umbilicus; Qihai acupoint is located on the midline of the lower abdomen, 1.5 inches below the umbilicus; Guanyuan acupoint is located on the midline of the lower abdomen, 3 inches below the umbilicus.

Method: Ignite one moxa stick each time and apply it to the acupoint. Moxibustion should be done on all three acupoints. Once a day.

Effect: Revives and stabilizes the collapse, warms and tonifies the original yang, promotes the functions of the spleen and stomach, regulates qi and intestines.

3. Back-Shu Point Moxibustion

Location: There is a back-shu point for each of the five zang organs and six fu organs on the back and waist. They are located on the Bladder meridian of the Foot-Taiyang on the back and waist. Their positions are generally close to the upper and lower arrangement of the relevant organs.

Method: Same as Shenque, Qihai, and Guanyuan acupoint moxibustion. However, because there are more acupoints, it is best to go to the hospital and have a doctor of acupuncture and moxibustion use an moxa box (a method of moxibustion using multiple moxa sticks concentrated in a special moxibustion box) for convenience.

Effect: Back-shu points are the locations where qi of the zang organs is transfused. They are important locations for the transformation of yin diseases into yang diseases. By using yang qi to moxibustion the corresponding yang positions, it can treat the deficiency of the five zang organs and six fu organs. "The great treasure of heaven, only this one pill of the red sun; the great treasure of man, only this one breath of true yang" (from "Classified Canon with Supplement"). As is well known, in the treatment of cough and wheezing with winter diseases in summer, many acupoints use back-shu points, which are also important locations for replenishing yang with yang positions in summer.
