Enhancing Qi and Prolonging Life: The Benefits of Moxibustion on Shenque

January 23, 2024

The Shenque point, also known as the navel center, belongs to the Ren meridian. It has the effects of warming and tonifying the primordial yang, regulating the spleen and stomach, and strengthening the body. Applying moxibustion on this point can enhance Qi and prolong life, and it has always been valued by health experts from ancient to modern times. In clinical practice, Shenque is often used for ginger-separated moxibustion and salt-separated moxibustion.

Ginger-separated moxibustion on Shenque: Take a piece of fresh ginger about 0.2 to 0.4 centimeters thick, pierce it with a needle to make several holes, place it on the navel, then ignite a small or medium moxa stick on top of the ginger for moxibustion. Moxibustion should be performed 3 to 5 times each time, once every other day, 10 times a month, preferably at 9 o'clock every night. Moxibustion should be done until the local area feels warm and comfortable, with a slight redness as the standard.

  Salt-separated moxibustion on Shenque:

The "Lei Jing Tu Yi" Volume Eight once mentioned using salt-separated moxibustion on Shenque, "If moxibustion is performed 300 to 500 times, not only can it heal quickly, but it can also prolong life." For health maintenance, a suitable amount of clean edible salt can be ground into fine powder and filled in the navel cavity, and then a small or medium moxa stick is placed on top for moxibustion. It is recommended to combine salt-separated moxibustion with ginger-separated moxibustion on Shenque to prevent the salt from exploding when it encounters fire and causing burns.
