The Power of Electroacupuncture: Enhancing Healing with Electrical Stimulation

The Concept of Electroacupuncture

Electroacupuncture is a therapy that combines acupuncture and a small amount of electrical current that is similar to the human body's bioelectricity, in order to prevent and treat diseases.

Advantages of Electroacupuncture

1. Combining needle stimulation with electrical stimulation can improve the therapeutic effect.

2. It allows for more accurate control of the stimulation parameters.

3. It can replace manual needle manipulation, saving labor.

Selection of Acupoints: At least two or more acupoints should be selected, usually on the same side of the limbs using 1 to 3 pairs of acupoints (i.e., 1 to 3 pairs of wires). Avoid using too many acupoints to prevent excessive stimulation that patients may find difficult to tolerate.

Procedure of Electroacupuncture:

1. Insert two needles into the selected acupoints to the appropriate depth, until the desired needle sensation is achieved.

2. Set the output knob of the electroacupuncture machine to zero and turn on the power switch.

3. Attach the output electrodes to the two needles on the acupoints, slowly rotate the output knob; when the muscles start to contract, adjust the frequency and wavelength knobs to the desired level, gradually increase the output intensity, observe the contraction around the needle, and ask the patient for feedback to achieve the appropriate dosage.

Duration of Electrical Stimulation:

Usually around 5 to 20 minutes. Needle anesthesia can last for a longer period. If the sensation decreases, the output intensity can be appropriately increased or the electrical stimulation can be temporarily suspended for 1 to 2 minutes before resuming.

Intensity of Electrical Stimulation

"Sensation Threshold": When the current reaches a certain intensity, the patient feels tingling or numbness. This current intensity is called the "sensation threshold". "Pain Threshold": If the current intensity increases, the patient suddenly feels pain. This current intensity is called the "pain threshold". In general, the current intensity between the sensation threshold and the pain threshold is the most suitable stimulation intensity for treatment.

Effects of Electrical Stimulation in Electroacupuncture

Low-frequency pulse currents stimulate acupoints through fine needles, resulting in the adjustment of bodily functions, enhanced analgesic effects, improved blood circulation, and regulation of muscle tension.
