The Unique Aspects of Moxibustion with Moxa Stick: A Comprehensive Analysis

December 15, 2023

Indirect moxibustion with moxa stick refers to a moxibustion therapy where a moxa stick is ignited and placed on acupoints covered by a certain barrier. This barrier can be the same as the one used for indirect moxibustion with moxa cone, which was introduced in Chapter 2, or it can be a special barrier designed for moxibustion with moxa stick. Generally speaking, the operating method and mechanism of action for moxibustion with moxa stick and moxa cone are similar. They both provide a dual effect of warm stimulation and penetration of medicinal properties. However, due to the larger range of movement and weaker heat intensity of the moxa stick during moxibustion, a larger area and stronger heat conductivity are required for the barrier. Similar to moxibustion with moxa cone, various types of barriers can be used during moxibustion with moxa stick, such as ginger barrier, garlic barrier, and scallion white barrier. Some of these barriers were already introduced in the chapter on moxibustion with moxa cone and will not be repeated here. Below is a description of the unique aspects of moxibustion with moxa stick.
