The matchstick moxibustion method is a technique where a matchstick is ignited and quickly applied to acupoints for scorching.
【Procedure】
Select the acupoint and use finger pressure to identify the presence of phlegm, distension, numbness, or pain. Then mark the acupoint with gentian violet, ignite the matchstick, and quickly apply it to the acupoint, producing a "pop" sound. The local area should have a slight reddish tint. According to the "Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion," if using fire to supplement, do not blow out the fire, let it extinguish naturally, and then press the acupoint. Therefore, when using the matchstick moxibustion method for tonifying in cold patterns or deficiency patterns, the lit matchstick should be left on the acupoint for a moment before pressing it, allowing the fire to slowly penetrate the skin and play a role in warming the meridians, promoting circulation, and tonifying deficiencies. For treating heat patterns or excess patterns, the method is to use purging. After igniting the matchstick, quickly apply it to the acupoint, the fire should be short and not pressed on the acupoint. Blow air to disperse the fire quickly, thereby achieving the effect of clearing heat, reducing swelling, and alleviating pain.
【Indications】
1. Mastitis
Main acupoint: Jiaosun. Auxiliary acupoint: Yifeng. Both use the purging method.
2. Pediatric diarrhea
Main acupoint: Changqiang. Auxiliary acupoints: Piyu, Shenyu. Both use the tonifying method.
3. Menstrual irregularities
Main acupoint: Yinzhi. Auxiliary acupoints: Piyu, Shenyu. Both use the tonifying method.
【Precautions】
For cases such as abscesses around the mastitis, moxibustion should be avoided. Moxibustion is not effective for enlarged mastitis. For pediatric diarrhea with watery stools and no signs of dehydration, this method should not be used. Matchstick moxibustion is effective for menstrual irregularities caused by spleen deficiency, but not effective for those caused by liver qi stagnation. Be gentle with the technique to avoid skin abrasion or infection. In case of improper care leading to infection, topical anti-inflammatory ointments or Yuhong ointment can be applied.
