Sulfur Ginger Moxibustion: A Traditional Therapy for Treating Musculoskeletal Disorders

December 13, 2023

Sulfur ginger moxibustion therapy is a method of treating diseases by placing processed sulfur on thin slices of ginger and then applying them to acupuncture points, and igniting them together.

[Operating method]

1. Preparation of sulfur moxibustion material

Take 90g of mugwort, put it in a sand pot, add water and heat it to boiling, filter it after about 20 minutes, and remove the residue. Pour the medicinal juice into a purple copper pot, add an appropriate amount of sulfur powder, stir it into a paste, and then increase the temperature gradually to gradually cook it into an oily juice, paying attention to stirring to ensure that the temperature is balanced everywhere. When an orange-yellow color appears universally, immediately remove the medicinal pot from the fire, otherwise the sulfur will burn and become ineffective. While hot, pour the liquid sulfur mugwort juice into a ceramic dish, cool it, and cut it into fine grains the size of mung beans for later use.

2. Procedure of sulfur ginger moxibustion

When applying moxibustion, first take a thin slice of ginger and place it on the acupuncture point, then take a grain of sulfur moxibustion material and place it in the center of the ginger slice, and then ignite it. The patient will gradually feel warmth at the moxibustion site. When it becomes too hot to bear, use a soft adhesive plaster to press it down and extinguish the fire. The moxibustion treatment focuses on the Tianying point (also known as the Ashi point, which is the painful area), and is combined with the surrounding acupuncture points of the pain.

[Indications]
