The Juci Method: Treating Conditions on the Opposite Side

December 11, 2023

Juci method is a treatment method recorded in the Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon. It involves using acupuncture points on the opposite side of the body to treat a condition. As stated in the Ling Shu • Official Needles chapter: "Juci means taking points on the right side for left-side conditions, and taking points on the left side for right-side conditions." This is because most meridians in the human body have corresponding points on both sides, and the qi can flow through these points. Therefore, if there is a condition on the left meridian, treating the corresponding point on the right meridian can be effective, and vice versa.

【Procedure】

When using the Juci method, it is generally recommended to select and needle points on the healthy side that correspond to the location of pain and functional impairment on the affected side (corresponding location, meridian, and acupuncture point). For example, for treating right shoulder pain with functional impairment, points on the corresponding painful area on the left side (such as Ashi point) can be selected. For treating right-sided toothache, the left Hegu point can be used.

【Indications】

It is commonly used for treating conditions such as hemiplegia after stroke, facial paralysis, frozen shoulder, migraine, sciatica, intercostal neuralgia, limb pain, and functional impairment.

【Precautions】

When using the Juci method, it is important to select points on the affected side in order to enhance the therapeutic effect.
