Needle Picking Therapy: An Effective External Treatment Method for Various Diseases

December 10, 2023

The needle picking therapy is a simple external treatment method for various diseases, in which the skin is pricked in certain acupoints to cause slight bleeding and the release of tissue fluid or fibers.

In the 14th year of the Qing Kangxi period (1675), Guo Youtao, without fear of ridicule from his peers, summarized the methods of folk treatment for swelling and wrote the book "Shazhang Yuheng". In the treatment of acute swelling, the famous Qing Dynasty physician Chen Xiuyuan also introduced the use of needle picking and acupuncture. In the fourth year of the Qing Tongzhi period (1865), Wu Shangxian collected and organized various folk external treatment methods and wrote the book "Liye Pianwen", which introduced many folk picking treatment methods.

[Operational Method]

Before the operation, the needle picking point should be selected first. The needle picking point is the stimulation point of the needle picking therapy, also known as the "picking point" or "needle picking acupoint". It is the specific position of the needle picking therapy on the human body and an important part of the therapy. It can be divided into fixed needle picking points and non-fixed needle picking points. The former includes meridian acupoint needle picking points, regional conversion needle picking points, and scalp needle picking points; the latter includes skin abnormal points, sensory points, granule points, nodal points, and meridian points. Currently, the following needle picking methods are commonly used:

1. Scraping method

First, the skin is pressed and scraped on the predetermined surface to congest it and reveal the hidden sha spots, and then the picking method is used to prick the sha spots and make them bleed.

2. Pincer method

Similar to the scraping method. The difference is that the scraping method first congests the skin with scraping and then picks the sha, while the pincer method uses the pincer twisting method to congest the skin. The gesture of the pincer is formed by the middle and index fingers of the right hand, dipped in salt water or hot water, and sequentially pinched the skin to be clamped. It is pulled and released repeatedly. The local skin will show congestion and stasis. The heavier the heat-toxin, the easier the skin turns dark. If the heat-toxin of the sha spot is not severe, it is not easy to cause stasis.

3. Grasping method
