Scarless Moxibustion: A Gentle Approach to Traditional Therapy

December 2, 2023

The scarless moxibustion method, also known as non-suppurative moxibustion, uses medium or small moxa cones. In clinical practice, the goal is to achieve mild scalding without causing blisters on the skin, or if blisters do occur, they should not develop into moxibustion sores. Because this method does not result in suppuration or scarring, it is easily accepted by patients.

【Procedure】

First, apply a small amount of vaseline to the area to be treated to increase adhesion. Then, light the moxa cone. If using a medium-sized moxa cone, remove it when the patient feels a slight burning sensation and replace it with a fresh one. For small moxa cones, do not wait for the moxa fire to touch the skin. When the patient feels a slight burning pain, immediately extinguish the moxa fire. Alternatively, continue the moxibustion for 3 to 5 seconds after the patient feels a warm sensation. Generally, moxibustion is performed for 3 to 5 cones until the local skin becomes congested and reddish.

【Indications】

Chronic asthmatic conditions, dizziness, diarrhea, and skin warts caused by deficiency-cold syndrome.

The acupoint selection method is the same as in general moxibustion.

【Precautions】

1. For those who develop blisters, there is no need to burst them, let them naturally absorb. In general, there may be pigmentation in the short term, but no scarring will be left.

2. For patients who are unconscious, have sensory impairments, or are children, strict control of the temperature is necessary to avoid excessive burns.
