Separated Moxibustion with Medication: An Indirect Approach for Healing Swelling and Abscess

December 1, 2023

The method of indirect moxibustion with medication, also known as separated moxibustion, is a method of covering certain drugs on acupuncture points and then applying moxibustion with moxa sticks. There are two commonly used methods in clinical practice: separated walnut shell moxibustion and separated toad skin moxibustion.

【Operational Method】

1. Separated walnut shell moxibustion:

Split the walnut in half and remove the kernel. Drill several small holes in the shell and fill it with dried chicken manure. Place it on the affected area and apply moxibustion with a moxa stick.

2. Separated toad skin moxibustion:

Take a piece of toad skin slightly larger than the affected area, place the inner side flat on the affected area, and then hold a lit moxa stick at an appropriate distance above the toad skin for fumigation and moxibustion until a warm sensation appears in the affected area. Moxibustion once a day, for about 30-60 minutes each time.

【Indications】

1. Swelling and toxicity:

Use separated walnut shell moxibustion. Apply it to the affected area.

2. Abscess and swelling:

Use separated toad skin moxibustion. Apply it to the affected area.

【Precautions】

1. For abscesses that have not yet formed pus, no further treatment is needed after moxibustion. If the abscess has already ruptured, apply oil gauze to the affected area after moxibustion and cover it with sterilized gauze for fixation.

2. Whether the abscess has ruptured or not, the pus should be wiped away before moxibustion to prevent squeezing the affected area.

3. During the moxibustion process, if the toad skin becomes dry, it can be moistened with physiological saline to avoid burns.
