The Dual Nature of Tai Chi: Understanding Yin and Yang Deficiencies

April 5, 2024

Everything has two sides, just like Tai Chi, with Yin and Yang. When the body lacks fluids, it is generally Yin deficiency, while Yang deficiency generally indicates a decline in bodily functions. People with Yin deficiency tend to be thin, have dry mouth and tongue, and flushed complexion.

People with Yin deficiency usually have extroverted personalities, like to be active, and generally have an excited state of mind. They often become irritable, mainly because the Yin energy in their bodies cannot control the Yang heat. The symptoms of Yang deficiency are different from Yin deficiency. People with Yang deficiency often feel cold in their limbs, have pale complexion, feel weak all over, and may experience loose stools and frequent urination.

One can also determine whether it is Yin deficiency or Yang deficiency by observing certain abnormal physical phenomena. People with Yin deficiency have a redder tongue with less coating. They often experience low-grade fever, afternoon sweating, irritability, dizziness, tinnitus, and insomnia. In severe cases, there may be rapid and weak pulse, restlessness, shortness of breath, and aversion to heat.

People with Yang deficiency are sensitive to cold, have a dull-colored tongue, and may gain weight or have tooth marks. Yang deficiency may also manifest as poor digestion, where food is not eliminated in the form of feces but is expelled directly from the intestines. The pulse is deep, weak, and thready.

These are the main symptoms of Yin deficiency and Yang deficiency. Both can have negative effects on the body, so when Yin deficiency or Yang deficiency occurs, timely measures should be taken to treat them in order to avoid delaying the condition and causing unnecessary impact.
