The Surprising Benefits of a Healthy Sex Life in Old Age

December 5, 2023

Traditional beliefs suggest that sexual interest declines with age, and mentally healthy middle-aged people will gradually become tired of sexual activity, while older people should eliminate their sexual desires. In reality, this contradicts objective facts.

Many examples have shown us that a happy marriage and sex life are a good remedy for healthy longevity.

German labor leader Wilhelm Thalmann once said, "Love is happiness, it is like sunshine, shining through all the hardships, sorrows, failures, and worries, illuminating all living beings." Modern physiological and psychological studies have proven that when the mind is in a pleasant state, the body will secrete beneficial hormones, enzymes, and acetylcholine, regulating blood flow and the excitability of nerve cells to the optimal state, and enhancing immune function. Therefore, a good mental state helps mobilize positive factors within the body, resist the occurrence and development of diseases, and extend lifespan.

According to a foreign survey, approximately 70% of 68-year-old men and 25% of 78-year-old men still maintain regular sexual activity. A survey in the United States showed that among middle-aged and elderly women aged 50, 60, and 70, 88%, 76%, and 65% respectively maintained regular sexual activity. Furthermore, maintaining an optimistic and happy mindset is important, in addition to cultivating one's thoughts, having an open mind, being confident in life, and maintaining good interpersonal relationships. A positive and moderate sex life is also crucial.

Moderate sexual activity can stimulate the brain's nervous system, enhance the body's adaptability, and balance physiological functions. In addition to ensuring sexual function, sexual gland secretions also help balance hematopoiesis, metabolism, and water-electrolyte balance. Conversely, without sexual activity, the endocrine system will inevitably become disrupted, and physiological balance will be compromised.

As scientist Svein Svaland said, "Helping elderly people achieve liberation in terms of sex not only has positive social significance but also enhances further emotional communication between elderly couples, improves intimacy and self-esteem, and allows them to experience a happy life in their later years without mental pressure. For this, society should understand and accept the elderly just as they accept the sexual activities of young people."
