Moderate Alcohol Consumption in Elderly: A Key to Prevent Aging and Cognitive Decline

December 1, 2023

A research team from the Divine Health Center Institute recently conducted a study on over 3,000 elderly individuals and found that consuming 1 pint (approximately 500 milliliters) of beer or 1 glass of wine per day can help prevent aging. Compared to those who completely abstain from alcohol, moderate drinkers in this age group have a 30% lower risk of developing dementia and a 40% lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

Most studies have confirmed that moderate alcohol consumption can improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of developing dementia (including vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease). What sets this study apart is its large sample size and the fact that the average age of the elderly participants is over 75, which is much higher than previous studies. Therefore, experts believe that older individuals are more restrained in their consumption of alcoholic beverages compared to younger individuals, and moderate drinking can provide them with better health benefits. However, caution should be exercised by elderly individuals with chronic conditions such as heart disease.
