How to Properly Store and Preserve Honeysuckle for Longer Shelf Life

November 14, 2023

I collected a lot of honeysuckle in my rural hometown this year and planned to keep it for making tea. However, I'm concerned about its shelf life. So, I would like to ask how long can honeysuckle be stored?

How Long Can Honeysuckle Be Stored?

Around 2 years.

For Chinese herbal medicine, if stored properly, herbal materials can be stored for about 2 years. Woody plants can have a shelf life of approximately 4 years, mineral-based herbal materials can last for about 10 years. Honeysuckle belongs to the herbal category, and if stored properly, it can generally be stored for about 2 years.

Can Honeysuckle Still Be Consumed When It Turns Yellow?

Yes, it can.

Honeysuckle contains active substances in its medicinal components, which can easily oxidize and change color upon exposure to oxygen. However, the color change does not have a significant impact on the medicinal efficacy of honeysuckle. As long as there is no mold or insect infestation, yellowed honeysuckle can still be consumed.

What Color Does Moldy Honeysuckle Turn?

Normal honeysuckle typically has a yellow-white or green-white surface with fine hairs, and it feels soft and elastic to the touch. Moldy honeysuckle may have little change in surface color or become lighter in color, but it may have a gray layer of mold on it. When lightly tapped, moldy powder may fall off, or there may be white or green mold spots and mold balls.

Is It Safe to Consume Moldy Honeysuckle?

It is not recommended.

Rotten honeysuckle refers to honeysuckle that has undergone mold growth or insect infestation. The mold or insect eggs produced can cause damage to the digestive system and liver. Consuming moldy honeysuckle may lead to stomachache, diarrhea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal reactions. Prolonged consumption can also increase the risk of developing cancer.
