November 12, 2023

When I was drinking saffron infused water, I accidentally swallowed the saffron. I would like to know if it is safe to consume saffron after it has been steeped in water.

Can saffron be eaten after steeping in water?

Yes, it can be eaten.

Saffron is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb with a sweet taste and a neutral nature. It enters the heart and liver meridians and has the functions of promoting blood circulation, resolving stasis, dispersing depression, and relieving pain. It can be used to treat conditions such as amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, postpartum blood stasis abdominal pain, and traumatic swelling and pain. Saffron itself does not have any significant toxic side effects, so it can be consumed after steeping in water.

Should saffron infused water be consumed?

It is recommended to consume it.

The main component of saffron, safranal, slowly dissolves in water during the steeping process. However, there may still be some residual active ingredients in the saffron. Consuming the saffron along with the infused water can prevent waste and allow for more comprehensive absorption of the medicinal components of saffron, thereby maximizing its effectiveness.

How to prepare saffron infused water?

1. Take 5-8 strands of saffron and put them in a cup.

2. Pour boiling water over the saffron.

3. Cover and let it steep for about 5 minutes.

4. Drink the water when it has cooled down a bit.

5. You can refill the cup with water 3-4 times during the day.

Although saffron has some benefits for women, it is still a medicinal herb and should not be consumed excessively. Generally, 5-8 strands of saffron are sufficient for infusion. The recommended medicinal dosage of saffron is usually 1-3 grams. Overconsumption of saffron may cause toxic reactions, such as stomach and intestinal colic, hematuria, and fainting.

Saffron has a strong physiological effect on blood circulation and can stimulate the nerves and blood vessels in the body. Consuming saffron every day may lead to excessive internal heat or symptoms such as mental agitation and restlessness.

Who should avoid drinking saffron infused water?

1. Women during menstruation

Taking saffron during menstruation may stimulate the blood vessels of the uterus, potentially increasing menstrual flow or prolonging the duration.

2. Pregnant women

Saffron has strong physiological activity and can stimulate uterine smooth muscle, promoting contractions. Taking saffron during pregnancy may increase the risk of miscarriage.

3. Individuals with gastrointestinal ulcers

The blood circulation and blood-moving properties of saffron can stimulate the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, potentially causing rupture and bleeding of ulcers or increasing bleeding at existing sites.

4. Individuals with pollen allergies

Saffron is derived from the stigma of the Crocus sativus flower, which contains a large amount of pollen. Individuals with pollen allergies may experience allergic symptoms such as rashes, redness, and itching when consuming saffron.
