Regulating Qi and Blood Deficiency during Lactation: Traditional Chinese Medicine Remedies

Postpartum weakness of qi and blood is the most common phenomenon, especially in women with weak constitution. Postpartum deficiency of qi and blood can lead to low milk supply and poor quality, making it difficult to meet the baby's growth needs. So how can we regulate qi and blood deficiency during the lactation period?

Qi Zao Gui Qi Tang:

Ingredients: 1 liang of astragalus, 10 red dates, 3 qian each of angelica and wolfberry, and an appropriate amount of lean pork.

Method: Boil the above ingredients together, simmer on low heat for half an hour, and season with salt. Eat the meat and drink the soup once a day.

Effects: Qi and blood tonifying, regulating menstruation, improving vision, promoting lactation, and anti-aging.

Suitable for: Postoperative patients, postpartum women with deficiency of both qi and blood, and those with insufficient milk supply.

Can Lu Zi Bu Gao:

Ingredients: 8 liang of chicken blood vine, 6 liang of Chinese privet fruit, 4 liang each of cooked rehmannia, dry lotus herb, and xianhe herb, 3 liang each of prepared dog spine, white atractylodes, and epimedium, 2 liang each of eucommia bark, phellodendron bark, and codonopsis, 1 liang each of deer meat and prepared polygonatum, and 8 qian of red ginseng.

Method: Cook the above herbs in water to make a paste, and store in a bottle. Take it twice a day, 3 qian each time, dissolved in hot water.

Effects: Tonifies qi and nourishes blood, nourishes yin and kidney, and anti-aging.

Suitable for: People with deficiency of qi and blood, cold limbs, fatigue, and postpartum weakness.

Liang Yi Gao:

Ingredients: 10 liang of cooked rehmannia and 5 liang of codonopsis.

Method: Cook the above herbs in water to make a paste. Take it twice a day, 3-5 qian each time, dissolved in hot water.

Effects: Tonifies both qi and blood, and anti-aging.

Suitable for: People with qi deficiency, fatigue, dizziness, pale complexion, and lactating women.

Ba Zhen Tang:

Ingredients: 2 qian each of ginseng and white atractylodes, 3 qian each of poria, angelica, and white peony, 5 qian of rehmannia, 1.5 qian of chuanxiong, and 1 qian of prepared licorice.

Method: Decoct the above herbs into a concentrated decoction, and take it once in the morning and evening.

Effects: Tonifies qi and blood, nourishes the spleen and stomach.

Suitable for: People with deficiency of both qi and blood, weak spleen and stomach, irregular menstruation, and insufficient milk supply.

He Che Da Zao Wan:

Ingredients: 1 piece of purple he che, 2 liang and 5 qian of cooked rehmannia, 2 liang of turtle shell, 1 liang of ginseng, 1 liang and 2 qian each of dwarf lilyturf, ophiopogon japonicus, and achyranthes, 1 liang and 5 qian each of eucommia bark and phellodendron bark.

Method: Grind the above ingredients into powder, and make small pills. Take them twice a day, 3-4 qian each time, with salt water.

Effects: Tonifies qi and blood, nourishes liver and kidney, promotes lactation, and strengthens the body.

Suitable for: People with continuous deficiency of qi and blood, fatigue, weakness, and insufficient lactation.

Hong Tang Jiu Niang Hua Tang:

Method:

1. Boil 1 piece of jiu niang with red sugar and water.

2. Beat an egg into the boiling jiu niang mixture to create egg flower, and drink it while hot.

Effects: Tonifies qi and generates fluid, activates blood circulation and stops bleeding, and promotes lactation.

Note: Consuming red sugar during lactation can promote uterine contraction and accelerate lochia discharge. However, the consumption should not exceed 10 days. If the hospital has provided uterine contraction medication during lactation, the dosage and consumption time should be reduced.

Dang Gui Huang Qi Wu Ji Tang:

Method:

1. Cut the black chicken into large pieces, blanch in boiling water, and rinse.

2. Put the blanched black chicken in a clay pot, add water to cover, and add angelica, astragalus, and ginger slices (the best ratio of angelica to astragalus is 1:5).

3. Bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer on low heat for 3 hours. Add a little salt for seasoning after removing from heat.

Effects: This formula is based on tonifying qi and blood, with astragalus as the main qi tonic and angelica as the main blood tonic.

Ji Yu Nai Tang:

Method:

1. After killing the carp, remove the scales and internal organs, and wash.

2. Pan-fry the carp with green onions, salt, cooking wine, and water.

3. Stew until the soup turns milky white, then add 50 ml of milk.

4. Boil and eat the fish and drink the soup, 1-2 times a day.

Effects: Tonifies qi and blood, invigorates the spleen, promotes milk production. Carp also has diuretic and anti-edema effects, which can help eliminate excess water in postpartum women.
