Galangal, also known as Gao Liang Jiang, Liang Jiang, Savage Ginger, Xiao Liang Jiang, Hai Liang Jiang, is the dried rhizome of Galangal, a plant in the ginger family, is a traditional Chinese medicine, but also edible, so what are the efficacy and function of Galangal?

Analgesic effect

The aqueous and ether extracts of galangal have synergistic transaminase elevating effects. Both extracts had significant choleretic effects on anesthetized rats, with the ether extract having a stronger effect. Both extracts showed significant analgesic effects in the hot pole method and the acetic acid twist test. It is also used clinically as an analgesic and pain-relieving drug.

Treatment of inflammatory diseases of the digestive tract

After experiments, it has been shown that galangal aqueous extract and ether extract can significantly counteract water-infused stress ulcers in mice and hydrochloric acid-damaged ulcers in rats, and therefore have therapeutic effects on gastritis, gastric ulcers and intestinal inflammation with excessive secretion of gastric acid.

Treatment of diarrhea

The aqueous extract of galangal significantly inhibits gastrointestinal propulsion in mice, and both extracts significantly counteract castor oil-induced diarrhea. Its aqueous extract is also effective against senna-induced diarrhea, and can be used to treat diarrhea and abdominal pain caused by food poisoning or improper diet.

Regulates blood circulation

Galangal is an aromatic and warming herb with rapid analgesic effect on angina pectoris and a delaying effect on the cessation or slowing of micro-arterial blood flow caused by mild adrenaline. It has a delaying effect on the time of tubular contraction.

Enhancement of itch tolerance

Gavage of both the ether extract and the water extract of galangal to mice prolonged the duration of open-mouth action in severed mice and the survival time of KCN-poisoned mice, but did not affect the survival time of NaNO2-poisoned mice. The ether extract also prolonged the survival time and slowed down the rate of oxygen consumption in mice under atmospheric confinement hypoxia, while its aqueous extract did not prolong the survival time of mice under atmospheric confinement hypoxia, but improved the oxygen utilization capacity of mice under hypoxic conditions.
