Constant Sleepiness: 8 Conditions You Shouldn't Ignore

April 14, 2024

Some people seem to be able to fall asleep at any time, even during the day. They either doze off while watching TV or reading a newspaper, and within minutes, they are in dreamland. Many people don't think much of it and believe that they just haven't been getting enough rest lately. However, it is important to be cautious as constant sleepiness may be a sign of one of these 8 conditions.

1. Sleep-related breathing disorders

Symptoms: Excessive sleepiness and loud snoring

If you have been feeling constantly tired and unable to wake up, it might be due to a sleep-related breathing disorder. Along with excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and a tendency to fall asleep, sleep-related breathing disorders also involve loud snoring and intermittent pauses in breathing during sleep.

The reason for the fatigue and tiredness is primarily the lack of oxygen caused by the temporary pauses in breathing during sleep. This lack of oxygen prevents the body's organs from resting properly. Frequent interruptions in deep sleep due to the pauses in breathing lead to a decrease in sleep quality.

2. Precursor to a stroke

Symptoms: Numbness in the fingers

If you have been experiencing unexplained fatigue and sleepiness lately, it might be a precursor to a stroke. Middle-aged men should pay particular attention to this symptom as it could indicate an impending ischemic stroke. With the faster pace of modern life, the incidence of cerebrovascular disease among middle-aged people has increased significantly. If there is a problem with blood supply and oxygen delivery to the brain, symptoms such as fatigue, tiredness, numbness in the fingers, unexplained falls, and changes in mental state may occur.

3. Physical weakness

Symptoms: Sleepiness during menstruation

If you have been feeling constantly tired and unable to wake up lately, it might be due to physical weakness. According to traditional Chinese medicine, sleepiness during menstruation is often caused by spleen deficiency, dampness obstruction, insufficient qi and blood, or kidney essence depletion. Sleepiness during menstruation due to insufficient qi and blood is commonly seen in women with weak constitution. Symptoms include shortness of breath, laziness, fatigue, dizziness, and palpitations.

4. Liver disease

Symptoms: Sleepiness and yellowing of the skin

If you have been feeling constantly tired and unable to wake up lately, it might be due to liver disease. The Ministry of Health recently issued a regulation stating that hepatitis B is no longer mandatory for medical examinations or school admissions. Many hepatitis B patients heaved a sigh of relief and started socializing more, often consuming alcohol without restraint. However, their bodies gradually became fatigued, accompanied by symptoms such as yellowing of the skin, rough skin, loss of appetite, aversion to oily and greasy foods, and nausea.
