Understanding the Causes and Treatment of Toothache

April 8, 2024

Toothache is a common oral disease. Some people experience toothache alone, while others experience pain due to external factors. Although some mild toothaches can heal on their own, others may require treatment to recover.

1. Tooth decay

Tooth decay can cause toothache, also known as pulpitis or periapical inflammation. Once a tooth becomes decayed, it becomes very sensitive to sugar, milk, cold, heat, and other foods. During a tooth decay attack, patients may feel intense, drilling-like pain.

2. Tooth wear

Although teeth appear very hard, they can also wear down. Once the surface material is worn away, teeth become more fragile and are prone to acid-related pain.

3. Tooth sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity can develop into diseases such as pulpitis and periodontitis. Dentin hypersensitivity is very common and is usually caused by tooth defects. It is more common in males and is characterized by sensitivity to mechanical stimulation.

4. Enamel damage

When the enamel of a tooth is damaged, it can also lead to the tooth becoming sensitive and soft. This is mainly influenced by external temperature and mechanical stimuli.

5. External stimuli

Tooth sensitivity caused by external stimuli (temperature, mechanical, chemical) can be relieved with desensitizing toothpaste, which is more suitable for mild symptoms.

If the cause of the problem is tooth decay, the diseased tissue needs to be removed and the tooth needs to be filled with material. If the area of dentin exposure is too large or if applying medication does not have a good effect, the tooth should be covered with a dental crown to protect it.
