Identifying and Treating Acne Marks: Restoring a Clear Complexion

March 25, 2024

Having pimples on the face is already annoying enough. But after the pimples subside, they leave behind acne marks that cast a shadow on the skin. In severe cases, they can even leave terrible scars! It is truly distressing! It is important to identify which marks are acne marks in order to treat them accordingly and eliminate them as soon as possible, to restore a clear complexion and boost self-confidence.

1. Pseudo scar - red marks

After the inflammation of pimples subsides, the blood vessels may dilate. However, the blood vessels do not immediately contract, resulting in a smooth, temporary red mark. If red marks are not treated promptly, they can evolve into pigmentation.

2. Pseudo scar - pigmentation after inflammation

Pigmentation after inflammation can leave dark discoloration in areas that have had severe redness, making the skin look dirty. In general, these discolorations will gradually fade away on their own. However, if not properly cared for, such as excessive sun exposure, they can evolve into stubborn dark spots that are difficult to remove.

3. True scar - indentations

Due to the excessive presence of pimples, the dermis can be affected during acne treatment, causing the skin to sink and form indentations. These indentations are actually mild scars, which do not disappear on their own once formed. They require medical treatment, such as laser resurfacing, to remove acne scars.

4. True scar - hypertrophic scars

Some individuals with a special skin condition have hyperactive fibroblasts in the dermis. If the dermis becomes inflamed or injured, the consequence is not indentation but rather a thickened, hypertrophic scar.

Mild to moderate acne that is not severely inflamed or causing significant skin lesions will only leave temporary redness and pigmentation on the skin after subsiding. These can be improved through daily skincare. However, severe inflammatory acne or using incorrect acne treatment methods can lead to true scars after the acne subsides. The removal of such scars requires medical intervention.
