Managing Low Blood Pressure in Elderly People: Tips and Strategies

March 3, 2024

High blood pressure, high blood lipid, and high blood sugar are well-known three major diseases that harm the health of elderly people. However, some elderly people may have low blood pressure, which is puzzling, but it is a fact. So, what should be done when the blood pressure of the elderly is low?

Regular exercise

Physical exercise has a regulating effect on both high blood pressure and low blood pressure. "Exercise can replace many drugs, but no drug can replace exercise." Elderly people with low blood pressure can choose suitable exercise programs according to their physical condition.

Increase salt intake

Elderly people with low blood pressure on a high-salt diet can increase their salt intake appropriately, about 2-3 times the normal amount of salt, which is about 20-25 grams per day. After consuming more salt, it is necessary to drink more water. The increased water entering the blood can increase the blood volume and thus raise blood pressure.

Traditional Chinese medicine nourishment

Elderly people with low blood pressure can choose traditional Chinese medicine nourishment to regulate blood pressure. They can take 6 grams of longan flesh daily, or take ginseng under the guidance of a doctor. The traditional Chinese medicine "Shengmai San" (10 grams of ginseng, 20 grams of Ophiopogon, 10 grams of Schisandra) can be brewed and taken once daily, which also has good effects.

High cholesterol diet

Unlike hypertension, a proper high-sodium and high-cholesterol diet can be chosen. Foods rich in cholesterol such as brain, liver, eggs, cream, fish roe, and pork bones can be eaten regularly in moderation. This can help increase blood cholesterol concentration and arterial tension, thus raising blood pressure.

In addition, consuming ginger regularly can also promote digestion, improve stomach function, and raise blood pressure.
