The Importance of Proper Brushing Techniques for Dental Health

March 2, 2024

"Good teeth, good appetite, and a healthy body, make meals doubly delicious." This shows that dental health is the first step in improving the quality of life. And brushing teeth is an important part of dental care that cannot be ignored. In today's fast-paced life, time is often a symbol of efficiency and money.

The fast-paced lifestyle has caused people to neglect good habits. People spend less than 1 minute brushing their teeth, and this kind of brushing method not only does not have a health effect, but also damages the teeth and gums. The purpose of brushing teeth is to keep the oral cavity clean, remove soft plaque, food debris, and some dental plaque, rather than just a form or a process. Many people have poor teeth, which is related to their incorrect brushing methods. Incorrect brushing methods can cause dental calculus to accumulate in places that have not been brushed for a long time, which not only affects health but also affects aesthetics. Proper brushing not only reduces pathogenic factors in the oral environment and enhances the tissue's resistance to diseases but also prevents various oral diseases, especially for preventing and treating periodontal disease and dental caries, etc.

It is worth paying special attention to the details of brushing teeth, such as cleaning the surfaces of each tooth's lips (cheeks), tongue palate, and occlusion. It takes at least 3 minutes to do this. Slowing down the brushing motion can thoroughly clean the teeth and oral environment, which is beneficial for eliminating gingivitis, killing viruses and bacteria, and protecting the heart, brain, and lungs. At the same time, a long enough brushing time is also beneficial for the absorption of medicinal ingredients in toothpaste. Developing the habit of brushing teeth in the morning and evening, and rinsing after meals, is the basis for maintaining oral hygiene and the premise for maintaining overall health. Meanwhile, we should also pay attention to small details in daily life, such as cleaning the toothbrush after each use and shaking off the water on the bristles as much as possible.

After brushing, the toothbrush should be placed upright in a rinsing cup, preferably in a dry and ventilated place. Avoid placing the used toothbrush in a sealed container. When brushing, avoid brushing horizontally, as it can cause hard tissue damage known as "abfraction." Brushing vertically can push food residues into the gaps between the gums, causing gum infections.

To sum up, the healthiest brushing method is to brush in a circular motion, drawing an "M" shape for the upper teeth and a "W" shape for the lower teeth. This not only removes plaque effectively but also does not damage the teeth and gums.

Friendly reminder: Everyone wants to have a set of white and beautiful teeth. But is it better to have whiter teeth? It is understood that when dentists choose the color of dentures for patients, there is a special color series because our skin tones vary, and the brightness of each person's teeth should be coordinated with their skin.

Therefore, we should not blindly pursue "whiteness." The tooth color that is suitable for our own skin tone is the natural and coordinated beauty.
