The Science of Drinking Water in the Morning: A Method for Health Preservation

March 1, 2024

"Drinking water in the morning" is a popular saying that has been passed down for many years. "Drinking water" refers to drinking water in the morning, which is a very scientific method of health preservation.

Most people usually wake up around 7 am in the morning, and this is the time when the large intestine meridian is most active. The large intestine has already absorbed the water and nutrients from the food and is ready to excrete waste and toxins. Drinking a glass of water on an empty stomach in the morning moistens the intestines, softens the stool, and promotes bowel movements, preventing and treating constipation. Therefore, the first thing to do after waking up in the morning is to detoxify. What does the "Huangdi Neijing" say about this?

The "Huangdi Neijing" says: "The lungs and large intestine are connected."

During the hour of the Tiger (5-7 am), the large intestine meridian is most active. After a night of rest, the lungs deliver fresh blood to the whole body during the hour of the Dragon (3-5 am). Then, the large intestine is "awakened" and absorbs water and nutrients from the food, eliminating toxins from the body.

A new day begins with detoxification. People with regular eating habits and good health generally have the urge to defecate in the morning. This is a natural trend of the body's vital energy and does not need to be deliberately cultivated. If there are no abnormalities in the body, most people will have a bowel movement in the morning.

You may have had the experience of being asked by a doctor in a hospital: "Are your bowel movements normal?" This question is mainly to understand whether your organ functions are normal. Now let's talk about the maintenance of the large intestine meridian. The large intestine meridian starts at the tip of the index finger and is connected to the large intestine, lungs, mouth, cheeks, lower teeth, and nose. Therefore, it is mainly used to treat abdominal pain, intestinal noises, diarrhea, constipation, sore throat, and toothache.

The large intestine meridian has a total of 20 acupoints. Here, let's introduce the Hegu acupoint. On one hand, the first joint of the thumb is aligned with the tiger's mouth of the other hand. Press down with the thumb bent, and the tip of the thumb indicates the location of the Hegu acupoint. Here is a small technique for acupressure: when pressing the acupoint, apply force towards the little finger direction, rather than pressing vertically up and down with the back of the hand. Massaging the Hegu acupoint can alleviate or eliminate diseases of the tissues and organs along the pathway of the large intestine meridian.

Another important acupoint is the Quchi acupoint. Because the large intestine meridian and the lung meridian are closely related, when there are respiratory system diseases, the Quchi acupoint on the large intestine meridian is often used as a treatment point. The Quchi acupoint is located on the elbow. When searching for the acupoint, bend the elbow and at the end of the transverse lines, it is the depression on the inner edge of the external upper condyle of the humerus. This acupoint is often treated with rubbing, wiping, pinching, and kneading techniques.

We often hear advertisements for "detoxification". The so-called "toxins" according to traditional Chinese medicine are the residues of feces in the intestines. We can perform self-massage to clear the feces. The specific method is to massage 50 times clockwise below the navel, and then massage 50 times counterclockwise. It is recommended to use the palms for massage. By massaging daily, detoxification can be easily achieved.
