Reflexology is a traditional Chinese medical treatment method that involves soaking and massaging the feet to treat local and systemic diseases. Reflexology can effectively promote blood and Qi circulation throughout the body, regulate the functions of various organs, and prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases while promoting overall health.
Reflexology is a popular term used in Chinese folk medicine, but the formal name is "foot reflex zone therapy". The feet are considered a microcosm of the human body, with corresponding reflex zones for each organ and organ system. By applying foot baths or various massage techniques to stimulate these reflex zones, the physiological functions of diseased tissues and organs can be regulated, allowing degenerated or dysfunctional organs to regain their normal functions. Reflexology can treat illnesses and strengthen the body even in the absence of any specific ailments.
The development of reflexology has a long history. In ancient times, people discovered that touching certain sensitive areas on the feet could alleviate pain and discomfort associated with certain diseases. Through repeated experiences and observations, certain patterns were recognized and gradually developed into the practice of diagnosing and treating diseases through foot massages.
Ancient Chinese medical texts, such as the Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon, contain numerous descriptions of the connections between the feet and the overall body. For example, the Su Wen section of the book states that Yin Qi travels from the head to the toes through the stomach, while Yang Qi travels from the hands to the head and then down to the toes. This indicates that the feet and hands are important points where Qi energy converges. The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon also extensively describes the meridians and acupoints, including many points on the feet. This shows that ancient Chinese medicine recognized the close connection between sensitive points on the feet and internal organs, and that stimulating these points can have therapeutic effects.
In modern times, traditional foot reflex zone therapy has gained attention in China. The therapy has spread throughout the country through various channels. In April 1990, the first national conference on foot reflex zone therapy was held in Beijing. On December 24, 1990, the Chinese Ministry of Health approved the establishment of the "Chinese Foot Reflex Zone Therapy Research Association". In June 1993, the Chinese Association of Preventive Medicine organized the "Chinese Foot Health Therapy Academic Exchange and Promotion Conference" and established the Foot Health Therapy Professional Committee. In July 1993, the "93 National Conference on Foot Reflex Zone Therapy" was held in Beijing. In recent years, this therapy has been widely promoted across the country.
