Optimal Moments for Drinking Water and Medication Considerations

February 21, 2024

Although we have talked a lot about drinking water, many people still make mistakes when it comes to drinking water. And there is no fixed timetable for when to drink water. However, the following moments when drinking water is necessary should be noted.

Drink water at these 4 moments of the day, even if you are not thirsty

    1. Drink water after waking up

After a night of sleep, the body loses about 450 milliliters of water through breathing, skin, and urine, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Drinking water at this time can promote normal blood circulation, prevent or reduce the occurrence of diseases such as high blood pressure, cerebral thrombosis, and myocardial infarction caused by increased blood viscosity.

    2. Drink water after a nap

After waking up from a nap, do not rush to exercise or eat snacks, fruits, etc. Drink about 300 milliliters of water first to prevent rapid awakening and dizziness due to lack of oxygen.

    3. Drink some water after getting up at night

During the night, the blood flow in the body slows down, increasing the risk of thrombosis. Drinking a few sips of water at this time can lubricate and dilute the blood, protecting the heart and blood vessels.

    4. Drink some water before going to bed

The viscosity of blood is generally highest from early morning to around 10 am the next day.

Drinking a small amount of water before going to bed can prevent an increase in blood viscosity at night. However, be careful not to drink too much water, as it may increase the amount of urine at night and affect sleep.

[Do not drink water or drink less water while taking these medicines]

    1. Medicines for treating gastric ulcers

Most medicines for treating gastric ulcers are either taken directly without water or chewed and swallowed with very little water to protect the damaged gastric mucosa by forming a dense protective film.

    2. Cough medicines

Cough medicines, such as cough syrup and licorice preparation, should be taken with less water. Drinking too much water can wash away the effective ingredients of the cough medicine adhering to the throat and trachea, reducing the therapeutic effect.

    3. Anti-angina medicines

Anti-angina medicines, such as nitroglycerin tablets, should be chewed or placed under the tongue without drinking water. The rich capillaries under the tongue can quickly absorb the medicine into the bloodstream and exert its effects. It should not be swallowed or followed by drinking water.

Things to note when drinking water in daily life

    1. If you drank a little water before a physical examination, is it considered fasting?

Fasting does not mean being hungry. When the body is in a state of hunger, various indicators of bodily functions may change and may not accurately reflect the patient's true condition.

Therefore, it is recommended not to drink water on the day of the physical examination. However, if you are really thirsty, you can drink a small amount to avoid affecting the results of the examination.

    2. Will drinking water while eating really cause indigestion?

In fact, when the food is relatively dry and saliva secretion is insufficient, drinking a moderate amount of water during meals generally does not cause indigestion.

Food digestion mainly occurs in the gastrointestinal tract. Drinking water may reduce the concentration of saliva and dilute some gastric juice, which may affect the digestion and absorption of food.

Recommendation: It is generally not recommended to drink water while eating. If you feel dry mouth, you can drink a bowl of soup before the meal and a small amount during the meal. The protein and fat in the soup can stimulate the secretion of digestive juices, to some extent, offsetting the adverse effects of diluted digestive juices.
