The Wrong Beauty Habits: How to Avoid Skin Damage

February 18, 2024

From a young age, we have been taught to develop good habits and to persevere in our actions. This concept is just as applicable to beauty and skincare. The key is that the habits must be correct habits. Wrong habits can only work against our goals. Let's take a look at some of the wrong habits below.

1. Sharing cosmetics with the whole family

The phenomenon of sharing cosmetics is common. For example, wives and husbands sharing, or mothers and daughters sharing. These practices are harmful. People have different skin types, so the choice of cosmetics should vary from person to person. Children have delicate skin and require high safety and non-irritating qualities in cosmetics. They should not use adult products. Similarly, children's cosmetics are not suitable for adults. There have been reports that males who have long-term exposure to female cosmetics develop feminine characteristics. Therefore, it is best for women to use their own cosmetics.

2. Using acne treatments as skincare

Many young people who have acne are accustomed to using acne treatments like "Fuke Song" as a quick fix, and some even use these treatments as skincare products for a long time. In fact, most of these treatments contain hormones and have significant side effects when used long-term. They not only fail to effectively treat acne, but may also cause other skin problems.

3. Going makeup-free is best

While excessive makeup can harm the skin, the practice of not wearing makeup or using skincare products is also not advisable. Our skin needs to fight against increasingly harsh environments caused by polluted air, strong UV rays, and cold air, among others. Providing hydration and protection is necessary. For example, in summer, the skin is prone to sunburn from UV rays. Choosing a sunscreen with an appropriate SPF can minimize skin damage.

4. Skincare products for sensitive skin are the safest

It is true that skincare products specially formulated for sensitive skin are gentler, but some of them are not effective in cleansing. It is important to choose products that suit one's own skin type in terms of cleansing and moisturizing.

5. Natural cosmetics are safe

Nowadays, "green" and "natural" have become buzzwords for environmental protection. People tend to use products with these labels without any concerns. However, even natural cosmetics need to add preservatives and other chemicals to ensure their shelf life. Moreover, natural plants can also cause allergies. Therefore, for those with allergies or sensitive skin, they should be cautious even when using "natural" products.

6. Ignoring seasonal differences

Many people have the habit of using the same cosmetics all year round, which is not scientifically sound. For example, during winter, when the weather is cold and dry, it is advisable to use foundation with moisturizing properties. However, using the same foundation in summer can easily lead to makeup smudging.

7. Only using sun protection in summer

Ultraviolet rays are the biggest cause of skin aging. Even in seasons that are not known for intense sunlight, UV rays can still deplete the skin's moisture and gradually damage the skin's tissues. To have beautiful skin, sun protection is essential.

8. Using a single product

Some consumers stick to using a certain product for a long time if they feel it works well. However, the condition of one's skin changes constantly due to factors such as seasons and age. The change from normal to combination, oily, and dry skin is a dynamic process. Different cosmetics should be chosen to provide the skin with the care it needs at different times.

9. Using facial masks more than 3 times a week

Depending on the type of mask, using it 1-2 times a week is generally the limit. This is especially true for masks that remove dirt from pores. Peeling off such masks can damage the stratum corneum and cause skin peeling.

10. Using facial cleanser more than 3 times a day

Washing the face with a cleanser twice a day, in the morning and at night, is sufficient. Washing the face more than twice a day can strip away necessary oils and moisture, leaving the skin dry. Additionally, excessive massaging can cause damage to the skin.

11. Using more than 6 skincare products a day

Makeup remover, facial cleanser, toner, two types of emulsion, adding up to 5 products, and there are still special skincare products. This practice is incorrect. It is enough to ensure basic skincare.

12. Applying makeup immediately after using toner

Emulsion can protect the skin from dryness and UV rays, and it can also help the powder adhere to the skin. If the makeup is easily ruined, it may be because too much emulsion was used.
