The Importance of a Balanced Sound Environment for Health and Well-being

February 11, 2024

After a busy day of work, everyone longs to return home and enjoy a moment of tranquility to relax both body and mind. Many people choose not to keep pets in their homes in order to maintain a quiet environment. They close their windows tightly to block out external noise and even turn off appliances that create noise. While this can achieve the goal of avoiding disturbance and irritation from noise, it can also be harmful to one's health.

There was once an experiment conducted where several volunteers were placed in a soundproof room. In this room, they could only hear their own heartbeat, the sound of blood flowing, and the friction of their joints during movement. After one hour, the volunteers' hearing became extremely sensitive. Even the slightest sound, such as sniffing, felt as loud as a gunshot to them. After two hours, the participants started to feel extreme fear and were in a highly tense state. After three to four hours, they could no longer tolerate the extreme silence and even lost their sanity. When the experiment ended, they all rushed out of the room as if they had gone mad. Although this was just an experiment, it is impossible to find a place in real life that is completely devoid of any sound.

However, in everyday life, we can still experience this phenomenon. When we suddenly enter a silent room from a very noisy environment, our hearing temporarily enters a state of tension. Our brain's thinking also becomes momentarily confused, and we become a bit disoriented.

"The existence of noise has its reason" is what this means. Therefore, we should try to reduce the harm that noise poses to our health, but at the same time, we should not always be in an environment that is completely devoid of any sound. This can also be damaging to our physical and mental health.

An environment that is extremely quiet or silent can make people feel fearful and uneasy. It can lead to irregular heartbeats, loss of appetite, and have a particularly large impact on the nervous system. It can create inexplicable pressure on our mental health, resulting in symptoms such as irritability and confusion. This can cause serious damage to our overall well-being. This is the result of going to extremes. A harmonious and moderate sound environment is beneficial for our physical and mental health. For example, the chirping of birds and the sound of flowing water not only do not make people feel annoyed, but also make them feel at ease.

Editor's Note:

Life is about movement, so do not let your body stay in a state of prolonged inactivity, as it is not conducive to good health. Even for patients on a rest period, they should still move around regularly. Otherwise, symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, fatigue, and neurasthenia may occur. Neurasthenia patients should not rest for a long time. They can create a plan for their daily life, work, and study based on their physical strength and energy. People who mainly engage in mental work should especially engage in some physical activities to avoid triggering neurasthenia.
