Understanding and Managing Dizziness: Causes, Classification, Treatment, and Prevention

Dizziness is a common functional disorder of the brain and is also one of the common symptoms in clinical practice. It is characterized by feelings of lightheadedness, heaviness in the head, imbalance, and dizziness. Dizziness can be caused by various reasons, most commonly seen in febrile diseases, hypertension, cerebral arteriosclerosis, craniocerebral trauma syndrome, and neurosis. It can also occur in anemia, arrhythmia, heart failure, hypotension, drug poisoning, uremia, and asthma. In addition, dizziness is often accompanied by headaches. When dizziness is accompanied by balance disorders or spatial orientation disorders, individuals may feel that the environment or themselves are rotating, moving, or shaking.

Classification of Dizziness

1. Non-pathological dizziness: Many situations can cause dizziness, including eye fatigue, excessive tension or fatigue, walking from a dark place to a bright place, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, chronic constipation, motion sickness, hunger, and hypotension. Generally, dizziness will disappear after the above reasons are relieved, so there is no need to worry. However, hypoxia, mental stress, and menopausal syndrome can also cause dizziness. If dizziness is caused by multiple reasons and occurs for a long time or frequently, it is recommended to seek medical attention. If various examinations fail to identify the cause of dizziness, it is necessary to examine the balance function of the inner ear in order to make a diagnosis.

2. Pathological dizziness: Sometimes, individuals may feel that surrounding objects are tilting or rotating, or even feel like they are sinking into the ground even when lying in bed. The diseases that can cause these symptoms include vestibular neuronitis, sudden deafness, labyrinthitis, cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, and brain tumors. If individuals feel that their body and head are spinning or shaking, experience weakness throughout the body, balance disorders, or sudden darkness in front of their eyes, possible causes may include hypertension, hypotension, or allergic reactions. When experiencing dizziness symptoms, it is advisable to go to the internal medicine or otolaryngology department of a hospital for a comprehensive examination in order to make an accurate diagnosis.


Considerations for the Treatment of Dizziness

Regardless of the cause of dizziness, it should be taken seriously. Due to the various causes of dizziness, such as brain tumors, cerebrovascular diseases, inner ear diseases, and certain internal diseases, it is recommended to go to a specialized neurological hospital or a regular hospital's neurology department for a comprehensive examination and diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, it is important to find a doctor who is specialized and experienced in order to receive effective and systematic treatment. This can help cure the underlying causes as early as possible to prevent the further development of the disease and organ damage, as many of these damages are irreversible and cannot be treated.

Effective Prevention of Dizziness

1. Engage in regular physical exercise. Exercise according to one's physical condition, improve physical fitness for those with poor constitution, and enhance blood circulation and excretion for those who are overweight.

2. Have a light and easily digestible diet. Avoid frequent smoking, alcohol consumption, drinking strong tea and coffee, as well as consuming stimulating foods such as leeks, chili peppers, and garlic.

3. Winter melon, radish, taro, fragrant ginger lily, chestnuts, adzuki beans, and rice germ have the functions of resolving phlegm, promoting water diuresis, and can be used as auxiliary treatments.

4. Do not drink excessive amounts of water and pay attention to the intake of foreign proteins, such as fish, shrimp, eggs, crabs, and dairy products.

5. During episodes of dizziness, it is advisable to rest in bed, minimize head movements, and prevent falling and injury when standing up.

6. The bedroom should have dim lighting and a quiet environment.

7. Maintain a cheerful mood and prevent excessive emotions such as joy, anger, worry, thought, sadness, fear, and surprise.
