Is Drinking Water the Key to Better Health?

February 3, 2024

The opinions about water vary. Many people believe that drinking mineral water can improve skin condition, and some believe that drinking water can replenish minerals. Let's take a closer look at these claims together!

Is it scientific to change the body constitution by drinking water?

1. Drinking water can improve acidic body constitution

The claim about acidic body constitution is unreliable. Not long ago, the founder of the "acid-alkaline body theory" in the United States was sued by a cancer patient and was ordered to compensate 105 million dollars.

This is because he provided so-called alkaline therapy to cancer patients without medical qualifications, which delayed proper treatment.

Anyone with some knowledge of physiology knows that the pH of human blood and some body fluids is around 7.35-7.45. This is a stable state of the body's internal environment, which can be regulated by the body itself in a healthy state and does not require special eating or drinking to maintain.

The claim that certain drinking water is "naturally weakly alkaline and healthier" is completely unfounded.

If the body fluids become "acidic," it is definitely due to a disease condition, such as diabetes or cancer, which requires medical treatment. No matter what water you drink, it won't help.

Products that trick you into spending money by claiming to improve acidic body constitution, whether it's water or pills, are simply deceiving you.

2. Drinking water replenishes minerals

Many natural mineral waters often mention in their promotion that drinking mineral water can help replenish minerals in the body and is more beneficial to health.

When you see water labeled with "this water contains natural minerals and trace elements such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium that the human body needs," don't rush to spend money.

First of all, you need to know that there are clear requirements in China for what kind of water can be called "drinking natural mineral water."

"GB 8537-2008 Drinking Natural Mineral Water" stipulates that in order to be named "drinking natural mineral water," at least one (or more) of the eight indicators in the table below must meet the requirements.

Not all waters containing elements like calcium, magnesium, and zinc are drinking natural mineral water.

Some drinking water may be labeled as "natural drinking water" or "drinking natural spring water," and the packaging often indicates the content of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. If you don't look carefully, you might think it's mineral water, but it's not.

In China, packaged drinking water is divided into "drinking purified water" and "other drinking water." "Natural drinking water" and "drinking natural spring water" should be classified as "other drinking water" according to national standards.

Moreover, the claim that "drinking water replenishes minerals" exaggerates the role of drinking water and is purely a gimmick. Our daily drinking water is for replenishing water in the body. As long as it can provide water, it is sufficient. After all, we still need to eat! The minerals in the water we drink, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, are far less than the mineral content in food.
