Mid-Term Treatment Methods for Stone Disease: Managing Complications and Removing Stones

February 1, 2024

When people are first diagnosed with stones, the treatment during a certain period of time can be called early treatment. Small stones are usually treated non-surgically to eliminate general pain symptoms and inflammation; large stones are generally treated with extracorporeal lithotripsy or surgical removal. The treatment results can completely eliminate or remove the stones, or relieve the clinical symptoms caused by the stones, preparing for mid-term treatment.

Hepatobiliary stones: antispasmodic and analgesic treatment (traditional Chinese and Western medicine, isolation, physical therapy, acupuncture, etc.), stone dissolution and fragmentation (traditional Chinese and Western medicine, extracorporeal lithotripsy, intracorporeal stone extraction, etc.), liver and gallbladder clearance (traditional Chinese and Western medicine, dietary therapy, and other treatments), etc.

Urinary system stones: antispasmodic and analgesic treatment, stone dissolution and fragmentation (as above), clearing and promoting lower jiao damp-heat (traditional Chinese and Western medicine, urine alkalization, dietary therapy, and other treatments), etc.

Dental stones: stone dissolution and extraction (traditional Chinese and Western medicine, stone extraction, etc.), promoting blood circulation and dredging collaterals, grinding and scraping stones, etc. Stomach stones: traditional Chinese and Western medicine and intracorporeal stone extraction.

What are the mid-term treatment methods for stone disease?

For patients with stone disease, after a period of treatment, the condition and clinical symptoms can be mostly relieved. However, when the disease relapses or persists for months or years without improvement, it is considered mid-term treatment. The stones in this stage are generally larger, or in the form of sludge, and are prone to complications such as damage to adjacent tissues and organs, inflammation, and functional disorders. Therefore, mid-term treatment must first eliminate or control complications, and then use methods such as stone extraction, stone dissolution, or stone fragmentation to remove the stones. Finally, continue treatment for the etiology of the stones.
