Choosing the Right Meat: Red Meat vs White Meat and its Impact on Health

January 31, 2024

In people's impression, "meat" has always been a good thing. Only when guests come or on holidays, will there be a treat of big fish and meat. Our parents always tell us, "Eat more meat, it's good for your health!" "Eat more meat, you'll grow taller!" Gradually, we also believe that eating meat can make our bodies stronger, give us stronger resistance, and "eating more meat" has become synonymous with good health.

Many people enjoy eating meat, they put more meat in stir-fry dishes, and it is not uncommon to have braised pork regularly. As a result, the situation of "no meat, no joy" during meals is formed.

Eating meat also has its rules, not all meat is good for the body. The meat we usually talk about can be divided into red meat and white meat. Red meat refers to beef, pork, lamb, etc. For example, sausages, hamburgers, smoked, sulfured, and salted meat (such as ham, bacon), as well as canned meat, are all processed from red meat.

For the human body, when the intake of red meat is too much, especially when red meat is consumed excessively, it not only does not strengthen the body, but also increases the risk of colon cancer. This is because eating a lot of red meat increases the content of a mixture on the cells of the large intestine, and this mixture attaches to DNA. Once it accumulates to a certain amount, it may change the structure of DNA, greatly increasing the risk of colon cancer.

As for white meat, it refers to chicken and fish. Compared to red meat, eating more fish will not have the above-mentioned side effects, and regularly consuming fish can also protect the body. Because the fat content in fish is generally below 10%, mostly around 5%, and it contains a large amount of unsaturated fatty acids that people need, so we should eat less red meat and eat more fish.

Here, doctors recommend that everyone should not eat more than 500 grams of meat per day. In daily diet, we should eat less red meat such as pork and beef, and eat more white meat such as chicken, duck, and fish. In addition, in the cooking process, we should try to use cooking methods with less risk, such as using a microwave oven or boiling and stewing the meat with water, which can reduce the production of carcinogens in the meat.

Eating too much red meat can change the structure of DNA in the large intestine, but the fiber component in food has the ability to repair DNA structure. Therefore, eating more vegetables or foods rich in fiber can effectively prevent colon cancer.

Editor's Reminder:

When the elderly choose fish, they should not choose fish without scales. Because scaleless fish contains higher cholesterol, for example: eel contains 215.6 milligrams of cholesterol per 100 grams, squid contains 264 milligrams, cuttlefish contains 275 milligrams, and crab roe contains 466 milligrams. Diseases such as coronary heart disease, arteriosclerosis, and hyperlipidemia are all related to elevated cholesterol in the blood. Therefore, the elderly should eat less scaleless fish.
