Preventing Facial Asymmetry: Tips for a Healthy Sleep Routine

January 30, 2024

Some people have experienced sleeping with air conditioning or a fan all night, only to wake up the next morning with their mouth twisted to one side, having difficulty crying or laughing, shoulder stiffness, facial muscle relaxation on one side, inability to move freely, and facial asymmetry. So why does the eye and mouth become crooked when waking up?

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that this is caused by deficiency in the meridians and invasion of the facial Yangming and Shaoyang meridians by pathogenic factors such as wind and cold. This leads to blockage of the meridian qi, lack of nourishment to the tendons and muscles, and slow recovery, resulting in the development of the disease. Influenced by the hot and humid weather in the summer, many people have their spleen and stomach obstructed by dampness and heat, leading to poor digestion and decreased appetite. Insufficient intake of nutrients, combined with increased body temperature and excessive sweating, long days and short nights, and reduced sleep, greatly increases the body's energy consumption. Therefore, the body is in a relatively weak state.

During sleep, the muscles and pores of the whole body are relaxed and open. If the air conditioning temperature is set too low, or if the fan or air conditioning is blowing directly at the body, it can lead to compression and illness. So, how can we reduce the occurrence of crooked eyes and mouth?

  1. Exercise appropriately

Choose some suitable physical exercises in the cool mornings and evenings, such as walking, gymnastics, Tai Chi, dancing, etc., according to your own situation. If you persist in doing this for a long time, it will gradually improve your physical fitness and greatly enhance your susceptibility to wind and cold and your ability to resist diseases.

  2. Ensure sufficient rest

Ensure sufficient sleep, watch less TV, use less computer, avoid various mental stimuli and excessive fatigue, in order to facilitate recovery from illness.

  3. Have a balanced diet

Eat less greasy and hard-to-digest foods. Eat more vegetables and fruits, such as peaches, grapes, bitter gourds, eggplants, bell peppers, and chives. Also, eat some rice, coarse grains, and other foods to ensure the supply of calories and vitamins to the body and enhance disease resistance.

  4. Stay away from wind and cold

Air conditioning and fans are the most common causes of illness. Therefore, do not prioritize temporary comfort and avoid prolonged exposure. After riding in a car, cooling outdoors, bathing, or drinking alcohol, also be careful not to let the wind blow directly on the head and face, especially for elderly, weak, post-illness, and people with chronic diseases such as hypertension and arthritis, who should pay more attention.
