The Importance of Properly Hanging Underwear to Maintain Hygiene and Prevent Diseases

January 28, 2024

In order to keep the color of clothes bright and prevent fading, many people wash and hang their clothes inside out. This is suitable for general clothing, but not for all garments, such as underwear. Hanging them inside out can cause invisible dust particles to stick to the underwear, which can be unhygienic.

Underwear is our closest clothing and should not be hung inside out after washing. Hanging them inside out can cause harmful substances such as smoke, dust, microorganisms, and hydrogen sulfide in the air to adhere to the inner side of the clothing. Wearing them can easily trigger various skin inflammations and for women, it can also lead to gynecological diseases.

Especially for underwear, as it directly contacts our body's genital organs, if we hang them inside out, insects can lay eggs on the opposite side of the underwear. Many insect eggs are invisible to the naked eye, and once worn, the warm and moist environment of the genitals is very suitable for the eggs to hatch.

The hatched larvae can travel through the body's passages (urinary tract, vagina, anus in females; urethra, anus in males) and cause diseases. Additionally, when hanging clothes, it is important to avoid placing them in areas that lack sunlight and airflow, as these dark and humid places are prone to breeding bacteria and viruses. Bacteria and viruses residing on underwear can also cause diseases. Therefore, we should wash and hang underwear using a scientific approach. When washing, turn them inside out and use soap for its strong antibacterial properties. After washing, turn them back to the right side and hang them in a place where sunlight can directly shine on them, as ultraviolet rays can kill bacteria and viruses.

A friendly reminder from the editor:

Synthetic underwear should not be worn close to the body. When selecting underwear, choose fabrics with good breathability, moisture absorption, and good skin contact, such as cotton, linen, and silk. Synthetic fabrics are not suitable for shirts, trousers, undershirts, vests, bras, and panties. Women and the elderly, in particular, should avoid wearing them.
